Hi Everyone,
I’ve been exploring hard surface sculpting by working on this Colt 1873 Army Revolver; crits and comments always welcome.
Thanks

Superb! Any tip about your workflow?
Sebastian, Thank you for your comment it means alot to me coming from an outstanding artist such as yourself.
I used pretty much all the amazing capabilities ZBrush provides.
I started with a fairly good exploded parts image from the web. I used the exploded parts image in Spotlight as reference to scale my pieces. I also happen to have access to an actual Colt 1873 Pistol which helped me understand the structure and function better.
I used shadowbox for creating the frame and several other parts. I found that even though some parts on the real gun are made from single pieces it was often helpful to make them from two or three pieces.
I found slightly oversizing the outer sides of a shadow box form and undersizing cutout areas and holes was helpful. Then relying on the clipping brushes to clean up and trim to correct dimensions.
I hope this helps. If you would like more specifics I’d be happy to provide more details.
All the best
Dave
Here is a short 360 vid of the gun
