Hard surface retopology

I know all about it I have just found something a bit annoying, I’m trying to retopo a tube of sorts that has little valleys into it. The quick way of doing this would be using the retopo tool. Problem is I want it to follow the edge of those valleys and it’s very hard to line the loop up with the x or y axis. This is a feature that is badly needed, being able to constrain the topology loop to an axis.
