Group sections change after up or down levels

Hi,
Every once in a while, I run into this issue. I would select an area on my model to group but then it changes once I down level and re up level,. (see image) I poly grouped each toe nail with a perfect selection of each toe. But the minute I down level and return, it gives me this.

Thanks1

Hi @louvfx !

Polygroups need to be defined at the lowest available subdivision level. When a mesh is subdivided it multiplies those polygons by a factor of 4 and creates a direct mathematical relationship between the base level topology and the higher resolution subdivision level. If you define the polygroups at a higher level of subdivision those high res polygons may not cleanly reduce back to those original polygons, which will cause the borders to shift when you drop levels.

Ok that does make perfect sense.
So my current issue is that my lowest level on the feet is 740 points, and my highest is 11 million. At level 1, the toes are not recognizable until level 3.

I will try to delete below level 3 and try again.
I fear that I might screw up the seam crease.
Thanks so much for the speedy reply.

So far…

Hi @louvfx

Unless you specifically want to keep your existing topology, then a useful workflow is to create polygroups at your highest subdivision, ZRemesh with Keep Groups and then divide and project detail back to the subdiv model. If your lowest subdiv has a particularly low poly count then the first step of subdivision might move the polygroup border too much. In that case apply Crease PG to lock in the polygroup border for the first pass of subdivision. Project detail and then Uncrease all and repeat the subdivision/projection steps as often as required. With this process you can hide/show PGs and still walk up and down their subdivision levels with a consistent border. hth

btw … very nice sculpt!

Ah, I just tried it and see what you mean. The Poly group stayed perfectly no matter how low I zremeshed. Thanks again for your input, much appreciated!
