Graphire3 vs Intuos3 for human figurative sculpting?

Hello everybody.

I am sculpting human figurative prototypes in polymer clays. Model kits of horror and action figures. I have been learning ZBrush 2 and have managed to sculpt some convincing elements. A rather good mandible and teeth last night took me about an hour and a half using a Logitech MX510 digital corded mouse. I’ve decided that a 4"x5" Wacom is a justified expence. My question is what would you folks have to say about this purchasing decision?

I can either purchase this week:
512 presure sensitivity Graphire 3, for $86.44 TOTAL via NewEgg.

OR

I would need to wait another month before purchasing:
1024 pressure sensitivity Intuos 3, for $206.58 TOTAL via Newegg.

P.S. Apparently ZBrush does not facilitate the tilting mechanisim of the Intuos.

Thank you in advance.

There is no choice here.

If I could afford one now…an Intous would be sitting on my desk.

You cannot compare 512 to 1024 and come away thinking that because tilt is nonfactor in supported options 512 is a better thing. Trust me on this.

Especially if you are into the digital sculpting end of things. the better the pressure sensitivity the better the control and freedom.

end of story.

Thanks Aminuts. Theres one passionate responce in one direction. I have one responce in the other direction elsewheres. Hopefully others will throw a few more thoughts on the fire.

just my two cents!.. I’ve always worked on a 512 wacom, and it’s perfect… but, it’s the very special cintiq, and maybe the fact that you see exactly where you sculpt is the key of the “no problem 512”… but as far as I can say, 512 allows perfect sculpting!..

Greetings,

I have an Intuous 9"X12" for my desktop and a small graphire for my laptop that is already about three years old and still going strong.

My recommendation is to go with the Wacom brand.

I currently use a 12 x 12 (that’s working area) Wacom Intuous 2 which is awesome, the Intuous 3’s are indentical except for a few buttons on the tablet itself, go with 1024 if you can wait, you won’t regret it.

Also Wacom sell reconditioned tablets from there site, so go check that out too.

If you don’t make the Lord of the Ring a simple Volito seems suffisant  65 $ maybe
Yes only 512 pessure level but see that marcel has said

Talking about the Intuous 9"X12" I have one of those and it seems that the tablet reads the pen when its up to 1/2 inch off the tablet surface and that is a pain in the butt to me. Is there anyway to stop the tablet from reading the pen when its not on the surface?

the software that comes with the pen tablet should allow you to set it…like corner to corner etc…sometimes its a two point set sometimes its more. Like touch top left corner touch bottom right corner , touch middle and draw a cross or whatever…there is usually something you can do to alter it.

Not sure how old your intous is or what kind of software came with it but wacom is pretty good about being able to set your pen tablet to your liking since about the first ones came out.

All told I have recieved ten responces here and elsewheres. I Just placed an order for the Wacom Graphire 3 4"x5" via NewEgg. My reasoning is that even if I do decide shortly that I want to upgrade to a Intuos and or a larger tablet model, all the Wacoms hold their resale value so very well that I can always get most of this purchace price back via eBay. And at half the price of the Intuos 3, the Graphire 3 will still be giving me a heck of a lot of bang for the buck in the mean time. Thanks for all the help.

Aminuts,
I have downloaded some of your favorite scripts from your signiture line. Very smart of the developer to facilitate such tinkering. Not only helps the end users. But keeps the experience fresh. Reminds me of installing maps and mods for Unreal Tournament 2004. Always something new to download if a person does a little searching.

By the way, can anyone explain the tablet size slider in the preferences menu?

Mythylon,

I can’t remember offhand exactly what it does and I don’t have it front of me to check but if you hold the ctrl key down and hover your mouse over that slider it gives you more info and should answer your question.

Stephen,

Your gonna like the G3 ( i suspect to that we will see it on ebay soon hehehe). Yeah zscripts are great and those scripts and or plugins in my sig are all indespensable to me. Have fun exploring them.
