GoZ won't install or work for Maya

I recently installed 4R8 on my PC (Windows 10), and GoZ won’t work on either Maya 2016.5 or 2018. I even had a phone call with one of the Pixologic employees who couldn’t figure out what’s wrong, although he suspects it’s some sort of permissions issue.

I realize it’s dicey, if Pixologic can’t fix the problem, but I figured I’d throw this out there, as the non-GoZ export process is obnoxious and weird.

The gent I spoke with supposes it’s a permissions issue–GoZ launches Maya (whichever one it’s targeted to, I’ve tried both), but then nothing happens. No GoZ shelf appears in Maya, the plugins don’t show up either in the UI or in the folders themselves. GoZ just installs itself nowhere.

Would anyone have an idea as to how I can get it to work?

Thanks!

You can install GoZ into Maya manually by following the instructions on this page:
http://docs.pixologic.com/user-guide/zbrush-other-programs/goz/manual-installation/
(It’s not difficult.)

You will probably also need to specify the path to Maya in the Preferences>GoZ sub-palette

This should work fine with Maya 2016. I’m not sure about Maya 2018.

If you’ve any questions, let me know.

I had actually tried that, but that seems to only install the shelf, not the whole plug-in.

Anyway, between my tech support call and the Microsoft forums, I beat it into shape.

Here are the steps, in case someone else has this problem (I can’t think I’m the only one ever):

Disabled notification on User Account Control, reinstalled GoZ from Pixologic\Troubleshooting folder.

Manually copied, from the Pixologic\GoZApps\Maya:

shelf_GoZBrush.mel goes to Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2016.5\scripts\shelves

gozMaya.mll (version-specific) to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2016.5\bin\plug-ins

GoZScript.mel to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Maya2016.5\scripts\startup

There you go!
