It randomly exports 1 mesh and then fails etc

There is a crappy workaround for those that want to use it in 2017.
Always work one subtool each time. Once that starts the session you will be able to send 1 or 2 subtools. After that Zbrush wants one subtool sent back from Max for each subtool that Zbrush will send to MAX.
