GOOD computer for zbrush 4r6

getting ready to make the purchase can you guys suggest a computer thats going to give me the beset graphics for this program with no getting frozen or hung up

was going for another system that required like 8core 3.5ghz 1 tb hdd 250ssd and a monitor of 2560x1440?
but since ive made my mind up on zbrush im not sure if thats over load or not

i just want a real fast real nice pc for this

thanks in advance

Well ZBrush doesn’t use your graphics card so you don’t have to worry about that. CPU and RAM are your only bets but since its a 32 bit program it can only use 4gb of RAM on Mac and 3.5 on Windows.

Maybe your freezes are caused by something else?

wow dosent use the graphics card thats pretty interesting
so simply a good ghz speed (like 3?) and more than 4 gigs

Yea it has its own little proprietary system that lives in ram.

I’m not to familiar with Windows hardware anymore so I’m not sure what the best stuff is out there but anything over 3ghz should be fine and I would suggest try and get a system with 12 gigs of ram since ZBrush 5 has been rumored for awhile to be a 64 bit release which means it’ll be able to use all that ram.

What’s your budget? If you’re looking to keep ZBrush happy and running at the recommended specs vs. the minimum, like chrono1081 said, you might want to go higher on the RAM for the rumored 64-bit ZB5 release.

If you aren’t looking to break the bank, you could probably build a decent setup for $600-700. RAM is relatively cheap (8 gigs in the $80 range) and something like a Core I5 quad core processor would do nicely on the rendering end & set you back about $200. Keep in mind, if you’re looking at an 8 core Xeon server processor that costs almost $2000, you’re probably not going to see much of a difference than something like a 6 core I7 (3930K / 4930K) processor at a quarter of the price that you could just overclock. SSD’s are getting cheaper & closer to the $1 a GB range they really would have no benefit other than if you subdivide high and ZBrush has to cache to the disk due to RAM limitations. Get a stable motherboard and fill in the rest with your storage and optical drives and you’re good to go. Your monitor will probably set you back the most. I’ve seen a few of the imported Korean brand 1440p monitors floating around the internet in the $400-500 range. Most of them are rebadged name brand displays. I’m not sure if you game at all, but make sure whatever video card you’re dropping in your rig has a decent amount of video memory & can push the higher resolutions.

HI thanks for the knowledge im budgeting 2300 for this
http://houston.craigslist.org/sys/4327647723.html

its overkill for the z but I also wanted to get some rhino stuff going, rhinogold, rhino with the t splines and emboss plugins
also for any other potential software id like to pick up

Just out of curiosity, I built an almost identical system through Newegg.com that came to a little over $2500. I’d go nvidia over AMD on the graphics cards, but if you aren’t gaming, you could go with 1 mid range GPU instead of 2 and save yourself a couple bucks. I think he’s asking a reasonable price for that setup though.

As far as Rhino goes, the minimum system requirements are low… 1GB of RAM, an OpenGL 2 video card and Windows XP. I remember using that program 10 years ago in college and it wasn’t at all demanding. If you plan on getting into high end rendering, that’s were you’re going to want a more powerful system to speed up render times. Most of your rendering engines out there rely on the CPU, so bear that in mind when considering the number of cores / threads.

I dont understand this at all, im running 4r6 on an i mac quad core i7 with upgraded ram to 32 g. Z brush crashes all the time, with just a few mill polys, and crashes when I use other tools not used before and many other stupid things i must wait for 3 hours a day just while i wait yet again for a project to open after its crashed . I am seriousely considering purchsing the new power mac with 8 cors and 64 g ram and every thing else i can through at a system that will at last leave me content to use z brush and not worry all the time about its problems. Please help

@john the bomb
I feel as though a PC is a better choice for ZBrush with maybe Windows 7 on it.
In Explorer click a .zpr file, it will open. ZBrush open, clicking a .ztl in explorer will load that tool into the project. Does it work with a MAC like that?
Search other threads about RAM. 4 GB is all it can currently use.(32 bit)
Latest release of ZBrush is ZBrush 4R 6 P2.

Hi Doug Thank you for your reply and suggestion. It seems peculiar that z brush only runs on 4 g, i cant believe the pros that work in big industry only use that amount, z brush surely must be a lot better for them, I wonder what systems they use?

You could have all the RAM in the world, a low end computer or a high range workstation, be an amateur artist or an industry professional. ZBrush is still going to be capped at 4 GB of RAM usage. It is a 32 bit program. ZBrush 5 is rumored to be 64 bit, although so was ZBrush 4, so take that that with a grain of salt.

I have no experience with Mac and am running the most current release on Windows 7. The issues you are describing sound more like something else is going on with your system that is causing it to hang since ZBrush is pretty stable most of the time. You shouldn’t have to wait 3 hours for it to respond. I would do a fresh install and go from there before you go buying all new hardware.
