Gizmo - A work in progress

Hey guys!

Am feeling pretty inspired by Rick Baker’s awesome creatures and critters lately. Today I decided to start a quick Gizmo sculpt. I’m approximately 1.5 hours into it now, not sure where I’ll take things next in terms of final output (whether it’ll remain in Zbrush or if I’ll animate him).

More shortly!

hehe awesome!

Very nice work.

Gizmo caca!

Thank you very much!

That’s my favorite line in the whole movie!

I wanted to see how CG fur looks on Gizmo, so I’m going to try and generate some nice fur in 3ds MAX using the “Hair and Fur” modifier for use in Zbrush. I am going to try and export it as geometry once I am completely happy with it. Here’s a little MAX screengrab:

More soon!

Hey I recognize this little fellow. His ears look a bit droopy to me though. Looking forward to seeing him more finished.

Thanks Mr. Baker! I’m glad you recognized him. I love how you made Gizmo that much more adorable, expressive and animated in the New Batch. One of my all-time favorites for sure.

I definitely agree about the ears, I kind of did that with the intention of rigging him for animation, but I’ll definitely adjust them before moving along.

Thanks for your feedback!

Cute little critter ! Would be ool seeing him bring harassed by Gremlins!

Thanks SolidSnake! I started working on a generic Gremlin to accompany Giz  I figure I can have a few of these in different color variations, and then one hero Gremlin (Stripe or Mohawk). More soon!

Here’s some more progress on the Gremlin

Hey guys,

I’ve uploaded a little ZBrush sculpting session to YouTube. More sculpting session coming up! Where I’ll detail the rest of the head, the ears and the body. I hope to record my Polypainting session for him as well. In this video I’m just having a ton of fan with the face, and all of its interesting little nooks and crannies.

There is a turntable at the end though! Please do keep in mind, this is a work in progress.

I hope you like the video!

Ahhhh, this brings back so many memories. I’m looking forward to seeing these guys develop. Looking good so far!

Hey everyone!

It’s been a long time since I’ve updated this thread. In-between other projects, this whole Gremlins thing has (unfortunately) been put on the backburner. Over the last few days I had the chance to work on the Gremlin a bit more. I’ve actually completed his rig and I’ve uploaded a quick rig test video to YouTube:

I rigged him in 3ds MAX using a spline-controller based UI to drive his facial morph targets (which were all generated in Zbrush). Here’s a look at the different morph targets/blend shapes:

Here’s a look at the whole rig in 3ds MAX:

CAT_Gremlin3.jpgCAT_Gremlin2.jpgI used a CAT rig for all of the bone animated parts. The CAT system in MAX 2014 is really awesome!

More updates coming soon!

Nice job! Looks like a nice, versatile rig you have there.

Thank you very much! I am definitely pretty pleased with the way he’s moving  It should allow for some pretty expressive poses and facial expressions.

Once I finish his texture maps, I’ll make a quick test animation so you can get an idea of the final output quality  Thanks for looking!

Love me some gremlins. Nice job!

Thanks! And I totally agree, Gremlins are awesome

Cool to see him move. Rigging is something that I have found very frustrating but I don’t really know what I am doing. Looks like fun once it is done though. Looking forward to some animation with displacements.

Thank you so much for the kind words, Mr. Baker! I expect to have his surface textures and a preliminary diffuse texture pass done by the end of the week. I was thinking of doing something cool with the Gremlin, and I have something fun in mind, so do stay tuned

Rigging definitely is one of the more mundane tasks in the 3D pipeline, but ultimately, it’s also one of the more rewarding ones. It’s cool to witness your mesh go from something completely static to an animate character. It feels like Xmas came early, to me

Before I start finishing up his sculpt/skin texture, and get into diffuse painting & map baking, I just wanted to share one more quick rig video

Here’s a quick walkcycle test (very rough & poppy) using all of the rig’s features. Again, it’s very rough, but I just wanted to show some full-body animation in conjunction with the morph targets of the face and body.
