Getting into the industry...

Hi, I’ve always wanted to do Character design, 3d modeling, and animation. I’m 21 years old and I’m very lost right now. I was at SVA majoring in computer art, then they gave me the boot during my 2nd year (during my intro to 3d course) because I couldn’t cover the cost of tuition. Now I’m working fulltime to help pay bills and going to a different school as a nursing major.

But this stuff is what i really want to do. I can sit and do 3d modeling or designing characters for hours. But I feel that I’m in need of a teacher, someone to guide/mentor me. I’m a very good illustrator and come up with my own characters all the time. I’m also pretty good with photoshop and as far as 3d goes, i’ve made a few tables and chairs when I was in SVA in 2007.

What I’m asking is for some insight, from my current stand point, on what I should do to start pushing myself into this. I’ve got some tutorials to start messing around with, as well as Maya and Zbrush. And also if anyone’s in NYC and is available for me to watch their work process and learn some things in their free time, please let me know.

Here’s a few of my drawings:

If someone here is located in NYC and will willingly “take me under their wing”, I will become their work horse. I don’t care about gaining profit, all I want is experience with good direction. I definitely believe that I’ll be a more of a help than anything, I’m a fast learner and have many talents to offer. I’ve already planned to start teaching/training myself but with a mentor, I feel I will learn faster having someone to show me the ropes. At this point, I’m willing to quit my job if I can spend that time being taught by someone. If you need me to make illustrations, new creations, designs, whatever, I’ll do it. I really want to be in this industry, this is my dream career.

If no one can or isn’t willing to do so, thanks anyway. Although it may take me a long time, this is what I want to do. And I will push for as long as it may take for me to start producing 3D work. So if you’re willing to take me on I look forward to working with you, if not then look forward to my first 3D model along with the others that will follow. Thanks.

I gues the way is to show up your works at sites like this, cgsociety and so on… prepare a decent showreel and sned it to companies. Make your website where you will show up your works.

And if you need a mentor maybe try the virtual one? Like Gnomonology videos. They are really great and you will learn a lot.
Quiting a job imo isn’t best idea unless you find a new one or don’t need a money. Those times are very tough, ya know?

Just take your time and don’t give up.

And no, I’m not a pro myslef  I’m just a random smarthead from the strit

Goodluck man
