Getting Crip Shapes into Zbrush

Hey, what would be the most efficient way to get a simple flat shape from photoshop into zbrush? Using shadow box seems to change the shapes way too much and I have to go in and do a lot of adjusting. I just want a crisp shape to pop into zbrush without having to spend so much time fixing it. Maybe I’m doing shadowbox wrong?

If you need to use Shadowbox, see if my post here can help you.

Preferably, you can also use the Text 3D & Vector Shapes plugin and use SVG files to create your shapes. This would be the way to go. See the video below.

You can right-click on the shape layer and export it out of Photoshop as a SVG file, and then use zbrush’s Text 3D & Vector Shapes plugin to load file (while being able to control the extrusion length, curve resolution, and even give it an automatic bevel if you want).

That worked great, many thanks! So with exporting svg, I have to use vector paths in order for this to work right? Would be nice if I could just use a black and white image, but that doesn’t seem to work like it does with shadowbox.

If you want it crisp with little cleanup then vector shapes are the way to go. If the image is simple and flat enough then you should be able to use photoshop to quickly convert it into a path/shape.

For rasterized images you can import them as an alpha (preferably a file format with little-to-no image compression) then try using Alpha: To Mesh, but I think you’ll get a similar result to shadow box where the quality, especially along curves, is hindered by the image resolution and the mesh resolution (which I think is capped at 2048x2048 regardless of image size).

Do you have an example of the type of image you would like to use?

Thanks, yeah my images are as simple as it gets, just a flat shape. Just imagine a black square, and thats how simple it is. What do you suggest?
