Hi guys,
I’m pretty new in Zbrush just want to know if it possible to put the information of a specific matcap into an asset
In my case I want the matcap (frame 02) for my scuplt
Watch this video. You can download the MatCap Baker plugin here. After that, if you need vertex paint, then you can go to “Tool > Polypaint” and click “Polypaint From Texture”.
You can save a material to Polypaint. First, on your draw settings, you’ll need to turn on either “Mrgb” or “M”, depending on if you want to fill a color as well or just the material. As long as either option is turned on, you can go to Color: Fill Object to assign the subtool whatever material is currently selected.
- Whenever Polypaint is turned off for the subtool, it will default to showing you the currently selected Material and Color.
- The “Flatcolor” material is a special exception since it is technically no material. If you fill a subtool with this, it will allow you to remove any materials currently assigned to the Subtool so that it will revert to showing the currently selected material.
- If the Subtool has a Texture Map, be aware that this can have its own Material as well. When the Texture Map is turned on, its color and material information will override Polypaint’s.
If you were talking about baking the material colors to Polypaint’s colors (but not Polypaint’s materials), then this can be done through a form of baking. Personally I prefer the Projection Master approach over the Matcap Baker / Displacement method as I find the result looks closer to how the Matcap appears.

Just know that regardless of the method you use, the result isn’t going to be 100% identical to the matcap’s appearance as Matcaps are based on screenspace, and you’re going to lose a lot of the dynamic looking properties of the matcap in the translation.
