Geometry>SMT not compatible with Zmapper?

I’ve Turned off SMT to hold the shape of my gun while I divide and add detail. When I do this then create a normal map, the normal map is created wrong. My normal map shows hard edges of the lowpoly version of the gun instead of creating a normal map of the smooth version. Hardedges shown in the below pic. Any ideas? Is there a SMT alternative or a way to make SMT work with Zmapper?

Could you please describe your full steps, from importing the mesh to when you create the normal map?

Tool>Import
Draw out tool on Cavas>Edit
Tool>Geometry> turn SMT off (to hold shape)
Tool>Geometry> Divide about 5 times
create detail with Tool>Masking>INT
Tool>Deformation>Inflate and smooth
Tool>Geometry>Lower SubD down to 1
Texture>1024x1024 new
Zplugin>Zmapper
Open Configuration>Maya tangent space best quality
Normal and Cavity Map>create Normap map

I even tried creating a Morph target before dividing and detailing, then switching back before creating the normal map.
