Contents WILL really have to change. This preview is incredible. And all realtime… shudder…

… such crazzy technics for so pathetic violence?
Yes, we need a flower growing simulation…
I suppose you could replace everything with fuzzy bunnies if you wanted to, but nonetheless it’s a pretty wicked game engine.
Now if they could just optimize it so the average person could play it, that would be great.
That’s pretty much impossible. They would have to cut so many features for the average user to play it… actually, they would have to cut most features… since the game itself requires DX10, which is only supported by the best of the best video cards on the market. Games like this are designed to push the envelope and force hardware manufacturers to keep up… Quake 3 Arena did the same thing, so did Doom 3.
I didn’t know it was DX10 only. When they started making this thing DX10 wasn’t even out yet. I hope they have a DX9 version as well.
If that’s the case, I’m sure not going to upgrade to Vista no matter how good it looks.
Ya know, after looking over Vista and all the features, I can only come to one conclusion anyway. The only reason Microsoft came out with Vista is to grab the younger generation through a flashy 3D desktop for which the rest of us would get bored with after 5 minutes and turn it off for better performance. Another reason is that this is Microsoft’s way of grabbing their slice of the pie in the gaming market ( XBox inclusion ). There’s a couple of tidbit features thrown in for the power user to partially satisfy them, but all in all, it’s just about gaming.
Sorry, didn’t mean to get off-track with this topic.
If you go to the source of where these videos came from you will hear them say that DX10 will add graphical niceties like extra particles and things like that but that it is designed to run on DX9 based cards. Words were also to the effect of it was not designed as a DX10 show horse.
Cheers

its pretty amazing thanks lemonnado =)
Narrator sounds familiar:D
Well if this is true then it’s going to save me a couple hundred dollars as I won’t have to upgrade my card when it comes out
It’s likely I will anyway though, because I’m a sucker for eye candy
Well that’s good to know anyway…maybe there’s still hope that I wont have to get a loan to upgrade to play this thing.
Which brings me to another point. I really don’t understand the phylosophy behind a lot of these game producers. Yeah, the game may look great, but if only the most elitist among us that have the bread to build these crazy puters can play it, will not that limit them in how many people will actually buy and be able play their game in the first place? Are they not then limiting themselves?
To me, a sign of a truly advanced gaming engine is one that looks great and has all the eye candy and is at the same time even less demanding on your system than the current gaming engines.
My phylosophy is that the greatest gaming engine that one could come up with is one that looks just as good if not better than this engine, but at the same time would only be no more than 500 megs in size and play as well as games a generation ago on our current systems.
I believe something has to change because it’s a neverending thing to constantly have to upgrade to keep up with things. And why would a company build a game that’s far beyond what the average gamer could handle anyway?
Half Life is one example. I love the game, but sheesh, if I turn up a few settings to get just a little eye candy, the game starts stuttering and chugging.
I believe the guy who created the Sims games is on the right track. He is currently working on a game called Spore.
If you’ve never heard about it, go check it out. Everything in-game is created procedually. The whole game size on disk will be a fraction of the size of current games because textures are generated on the fly. Textures in games is usually one of the biggest reasons why games are so demanding because they take up so much memory. If he could create the same advanced effects as these other gaming engines using the same technique, he could really be on to something.
“Textures created on the flag”
What do you mean ? If textures has to be created, even proceduraly, they will cost in memory.
You can check those procedural texture creators, they need sometime minuts to compute the final picture. And good luck to reach this quality…
Thats a really nice demo, but I hardly imagine what kind of pc you will need to run it…
Just like doom3 at his time…
When a game loads a level, it has to first decompress all the necessary images files to load into a level. This may include color, bump, normal, and or dissplacement maps. Those files tend to be large.
It still takes processing power to decompress, but also has to load all those textures into memory whereas if all the textures were generated procedually, it would only have to generate it when needed. It would also allow you to created a varied array of textures with just a slight difference in code which could give you a much larger degree in the variety of textures that you could use.
Yes it would also take processing power to do it, but it would still save you in memory.
I know that this is still in it’s infancy, but there may come a time when they will be able to generate textures that look just as good and realistic as any man-made image texture.
Just look at 3D modeling programs in how they are able to procedually generate texutures that look just as good as the real thing.
i agree. and for anyone thinking that games have to have violence or fluffy bunnies or flowers. this isnt what frenchy is thinking about. stop having such a black and white view of things. look at some ps2 games, theres sooo many games that dont rely as much on violence and yet they kick total butt. as mentioned before, spore is a perfect example. yes there are aspects of violence, but thats because it deals with different civilizations and society, and yes theres conflicts going on everywhere. however, crytec is ONLY about that. hell your character has to have some sort of object of destruction in his hand. there is no way around it.
theres no need to ever solve any puzzles or anything. just point and shoot. creativity=0.
heh, its funny cuz one time i read someones review of first person games. and the way they judged creativity in any fps game was to see how fast in the game the person came by a crate, or barrel, or some other object like that. as soon as you came by that object youd know when the team started to run out of ideas. sometimes in games youd see barrels and boxes as soon as the first level. funniest method of reviewing ever!.
so yes, it looks amazing, and im all for it, because i want to create content of this quality. BUT i would love to see more creative usage of this powerful technology.
BUT i would love to see more creative usage of this powerful technology.
…with this luminous bright light evidence!
Spore will be show the beginning way!
Ohhhh, he’s French. That explains it. LOL! =)
In high res render, you see more the defautls…
I just hope the game to be good, and not laggy…
