Functionality in 4.0 seems to be missing with constraining an alpha line straight.

Hello all,

In 3.5 and previous versions I could hold the crtl then the shift key down with a stroke brush and have it constrain itself to a straight line. Now that the functions are for the new clip brushes, did this get moved to different keys?

Thanks!

I’ve notice that too, the only way out is with projection master, I hope they fix that, it was a cool way for masking staight line. :frowning:

You can mask in a straight line using the MaskCurve.

I know you can mask off a straight EDGE with the clipcurve setting, but doesn’t that require a second step to then go back and remove the bulk of the masked form you make using clipcurve masking brush, in order to THEN end up with the straight line?

This procedure seems terribly inefficient. Holding a modifier key while using a brush type tool inorder to constrain the stroke to a straight line is pretty much a universal. Even if Pixologic had to give up the shift key in order to offer the complex number of masking/hiding/clipping features, there should be some other key devoted to drawing a straight line when masking. But of course I may be missing something here.

You can add a Lazystroke to your brush with Line, Snap to Line and Back track, then you’re all set for precision line masking. It’s a workaround I use.

Note that you must be pressing Ctrl down while selecting those lazy mouse options so that they apply to your masking stroke.

Here’s a visual representation of what Extra Dimensional is talking about. This is for masks. You can do the same for regular brush strokes, just don’t hold down the ctrl key.

Excellent. Thanks very much!

Great workaround :+1: (And another one for the big book, Nancy! )

great work around, however snap to track isn’t available in projection master. Anyone found a work around to allow a straight line while using the line tool in PM?

In Projection Master you use the 2.5D tools, for which there is a greater range of strokes. Click the Stroke>large thumbnail to show them.

YES! “Big Book” worthy!! :stuck_out_tongue:

Heya Marcus,

Holding shift doesn’t constrain the line tool (or LineII) to snapped axis as one would expect. Oddly I have noticed that every now and then it will snap, and i think its somehow related to what alpha is selected.

Heres a screen shot. I’m looking to find a way to make a perfectly horizontal or vertical line.

Thanks Marcus

I didn’t have any problems at all in Projection master. I tried Line stroke and LineII stroke and different alphas and it snapped to horizontal and vertical with no problems. You just have to make sure you start drawing your stroke before you press Shift.

Thanks Zber,

I think i was pressing the shift before my stroke was actually over the mesh but after I had actually started the stroke.

Any idea about the zsub with PM leaving those faces/edges in certain areas?

I don’t think it matters if the stroke is on or off the mesh as long as you start the stroke first then constrain it to horizontal, vertical or 45*.

As to the other part, this is normal for Projection Master and nothing is broken. I think it’s because of the fact that it builds on or subtracts from existing geometry and that it does this in 2.5D.

There are other ways to achieve what you want. To see what can and can’t be done in Projection Master, I would highly recommend you watch Projection Master Techniques with Sebastien Legrain
