Frustrated About Lack of Mac Documentation!

I emailed Pixologic and they said there is no current documentation for the mac. I quote:

“We do not have a single .pdf file for 3.12 for the Mac. We do have several resources available. There is our ZClassroom, http://www.pixologic.com/zclassroom/, you can find Videos, Tutorials, links to third party trainging, various online documents.”

I have followed all of the ZClassroom Videos, but the videos, although helpful in some areas, did not explain the proper steps I needed.

I am frustrated at the lack of documentation for the mac. For example I am following the ZBrush 3 documentation here: http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/TOC. It says to follow the 3.12 addendum but that documentation is far from complete as it doesn’t explain how to Bake my Polypainting into a Texture Map and other important steps I ned to learn. So I looked and found instructions here: http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Baking_PolyPainting_into_a_Texture_Map but these steps are different and the buttons are different on the mac 3.2 version. There was no mac 3.1 manual either. I don’t think it is reasonable to sell a piece of software and expect the user to figure it out without any documentation. ZBrush is great, but not when you have no manual.

Please tell me where I can find the proper steps for this and other related functions for the mac? This is very frustrating.

Thanks

For info, making a texture map from your polypainting, a quick video.

You need UVs, so in this case I set them in zbrush.

Please keep in mind that 3.12 (and 3.2) are interim versions. They’re stepping stones with very short lifespans. In less than a month now, they’ll be replaced by ZBrush 3.5 for the Mac.

For now it is necessary to use a little intuition. If you’re working with a tutorial for ZBrush 3.1 and you come to a screen shot that doesn’t match version 3.2, that is something that changed starting with 3.12 and so is talked about in the 3.12 PDF addendum. Of course, if you’ve read the addendum and understand the philosophies of what has changed with 3.12 and 3.2, then you shouldn’t even have to refer back to the addendum anymore. Version 3.12+ has been laid out to simplify things and require less jumping around, while also allowing textures to be created for and applied to individual SubTools. Once you have a handle on that, it becomes very intuitive.

We’re currently working on new documentation which will bring everything up to speed for version 3.5.

Thanks everyone. Yes I have read the addendum and am familiar with the new features. In the instructions here: http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Baking_PolyPainting_into_a_Texture_Map

Create a texture at the size you want for your final map. For 2048 x 2048, follow the steps below.

  1. Set (Texture > Width to 2048)
  2. Set (Texture > Height to 2048)
  3. Press (Texture > New Texture)

Question #1
Do I just use the Tool > Texture (see image) for the step #3 above that says Texture > New Texture?

Question #2
Setting a Texture Map Size
I’m trying to create a 2048 x 2048 map size in the Texture palette but the sliders don’t let you set it to 2048. THe closest I can get is 2042. Is there a way to type in the size manually? I tried double-clicking on the size box like you can do in so many other apps but it doesn’t let you highlight or change the size manually. Really Frustrating!

  1. In 3.12 and higher, you use Tool>UV Map to set your texture size. That value will be used for all textures created for that model until you change it. You don’t use the Texture palette at all. It even has presets, so to get that 2048 texture you just click Tool>UV Map>2048. You no longer need to have a map preassigned to the model to get the desired size.
  2. All sliders in ZBrush can be set by sliding them OR by clicking once and then typing the desired value.
By the way, Tool>Texture>New Texture simply creates a blank texture of the size specified in the Tool>UV Map menu. This is not necessary for most situations.
