Hi all,
My netwoking buddied over at bb4win chat have turned me on to a great package for running computers from remote locations… Via Internet, LAN, or WLAN…
:b2: Scenerio:
It is the week end and you have the day off… Your boss calls you and needs an Email desperately… the Email is in your work systems inbox…
Now on your day off you have to go to work, just to open up your e-mail application and forward the email to your boss…
:b2: Another Scenerio:
You own a LAN for a rendering farm, you own 5 computers, and sometimes have to go and check on the status… you have to do a few routiene tasks to the entire network…
Now you have to get up from your main office desk and go to each location, and preform the tasks…
:b2: Yet another scenerio:
you have 2 systems on your desktop one runs linux the other runs Windoze , and you only want to use 1 monitor , 1 keyboard, and 1 mous to control both systems… Yet, you are too cheep to buy a 30$ KVM switch , what do you do?
:b2: Last Scenerio…
You own a windows based PC, your grand mother owns a Linux or a mac system…
your grand mother has to have you over once a week for routine matinence on the system and to help her learn the new system… but your grand mother lives 200 miles away
:b4: :b4: :b2: welll! Here is a cool tool for everyone that is free and easyer to set up than an email application…
It is called VNC… It is for Windows, MAC, and *.nix based systems… install the server on one system, and copy down the IP address… then on the client system install the viewer… and type in the IP address from the server… Passwords and login names Optional… you can also lock out the internet, and just use it on your LAN… most linux distrabutions have this also, it is usualy opened from the comandline… like this:
$VNC 255.255.255.0
easy eh, just the command VNC and the Ipaddress…
Here is a link to a nice version… Because VNC is open source it comes in all kinds of flavours… some for security, some for spying, and some for speed… be sure to shop around first if you are installing this on your buisness system…
another great way to use this is to monitor your childrens system, or to spy on your spouse…
Great for makeing sure your employees are working… if you log in and see solitare or doom 3 on the screen you can close it, then open notepad and type the message YOU ARE FIRED! without leaveing your desk…
for network supervisors,
you can help out people in your workgroup from your desk, insted of walking to their desk and leaning over their sholder… this way you can continue to do what ever network supervisors do when everything is running ok (play doom 3, or solitare??)
the possdibilitys are endless
