Hey everyone. I recently was tasked with bringing life to some character designs that were destined to be 3d printed at life size for Fortress Melbourne, the largest E-Sports centre in the southern hemisphere! I had 6 characters to create ranging from a 1.6m tall mage, a 2m tall hulking tank to a 5m tall demon!
We were hoping to 3D print the whole cast of characters, but we ended up focusing on a smaller range to start with, potentially printing the rest in the future. We started with Vela who is the mage. She stands at 1.6m from heel to head. Her body was printed on a massive 3d printer with her smaller parts printed on a smaller finer printer. The large 3d printer was great at laying down a lot of material fast but lacked the detail needed for the finer pieces. The characters also need to be available for animation, reposing and other digital media so I made some real-time versions as well.
Second to be made was Kadath, the 5m tall demon. Due to his size we decided to just manufacture his head and mount it above the fireplace of the medieval themed tavern on the bottom floor of Fortress Melbourne. He was routed out of hard foam using a robot arm router. We also made his and Carina, the 2m tall warrior, weapons in the same way and they were mounted on the walls of the tavern.
Jim, the troll is in the process of being manufactured and installed and I am excited to share some photos when the time comes!
