I was playing around with another way to make hair—with fog! The thinking was that you could get a feathered edge along your object due to the nature and settings of fog.
to follow along with this technique:
Create your main object on one layer.
One another, paint a B&W image of the hair shape. This will act as the fog alpha. It is helpful to fill this layer with a slightly transparent material to see the object underneath. Do a screen grab to get this texture.

On another layer, paint the hair color map. This doesn’t have to be exacting in its form as the alpha takes care of that. Apply this in the fog texture channel.

set your fog near point on the character’s nose and the far point further back on the head.
It is an odd method, I agree, and not better than a carefully done fiber brush, but does have the advantage of being able to change hair color quickly. Just repaint or alter your hair color layer, grab it, and plug that back into the fog texture channel.

If anybody else finds some fog uses, be sure and post them. Fog doesn’t always have to be fog!

I like that yodaish guy there.
