Fog Hair

I was playing around with another way to make hair—with fog! The thinking was that you could get a feathered edge along your object due to the nature and settings of fog.

to follow along with this technique:

Create your main object on one layer.

One another, paint a B&W image of the hair shape. This will act as the fog alpha. It is helpful to fill this layer with a slightly transparent material to see the object underneath. Do a screen grab to get this texture.

On another layer, paint the hair color map. This doesn’t have to be exacting in its form as the alpha takes care of that. Apply this in the fog texture channel.

set your fog near point on the character’s nose and the far point further back on the head.

It is an odd method, I agree, and not better than a carefully done fiber brush, but does have the advantage of being able to change hair color quickly. Just repaint or alter your hair color layer, grab it, and plug that back into the fog texture channel.

If anybody else finds some fog uses, be sure and post them. Fog doesn’t always have to be fog!

Very cute idea, Ken… :+1:
I’ll definitely give this a try!

:sunglasses: :+1: :sunglasses:

Jeez! I can’t even get fog to look like fog or go where I want it never mind use it to make hair!!!

Brilliant idea, wherever do you come up with these ideas???

I really like the bone structure on the man here, very primal and strong!!

:+1: :+1:

An amazing - and very effective - piece of lateral thinking, Ken. :+1: :+1: :+1:

Fog hair… creative! I like that yodaish guy there.

One of my favorite examples of “non-fog” fog is Kruzr’s rainy lighthouse, unfortunatly I cannot find the thread…

This is going to change the saying to, “finer than fog hair.”

Talk about a clever idea with a lot of potential for exploration!

Here is my xperience with this technic…IT´S SOOOOOO COOL!!!

This opens a big door in making hair.

Do you remember this girl?

thats an extremely cool idea, Ken! makes me wonder if there would be a way to do everything painted with fog only  + manymany :+1:s!

Looks like it would make pretty realistic fire with a bit of work.

Hey Hanuman, that fog-fire idea was done already. Do you remember an image of The Balrog(I don´t remember who did it…sorry)? In that image it was used this technic to do the fire…and what a nice fire it was  .

Yeah I do remember that post by jelee, I was more interested in the low poly modelling aspect of it though that was explained in the pdf, I remember the fire but I didn’t check how it was done.

 I think I like it,I will give it a try :+1: the hair on the male head is pretty cool.

This isn’t anything much, more of a practice piece. Lots of great tips like this fog hair. Mine turned out crappy, but I never knew any of those fog things were even there, like texture and alpha. (That’s what I get for not reading the manual I guess ~s~ Just never paused my mouse over those two dark squares, duh) Thanks Ken.

The other things I practiced on was, ears out of a ring and the erase brush, and glow material.

Excuse the really bad modeling.
