First Zbrush Model !

I got zbrush about 2 months now. Didn’t have alot of time to learn about this due to too much work. mostly read the forum and learn from you guys. Thanks alot. This forum is my learning place. I am having so much trouble with zbrush special when i tried to create a material as i want. I also know nothing about lighting in zbrush. I made this model from the ball. i used the pic as a reference. however, i am having trouble to get the light and shadows as in the picture. finally i quit trying in zbrush. i brought it in photoshop and paint a fake shadow and highlight. I also having problem with the camera. I can’t control the camera’s point of view. In the reference picture, there ar pespective view. however, i can’t do it in zbrush (or i dont’ know it yet). Please feel free give advise. I am going to post the model render pure from zbrush and different shots from different angles tomorrow. Cheerheadcompare.jpg

If you’re using the Mac version, you can model with perspective on now. I believe it’s hotkey ‘u’, but could easily be mistaken. Can anyone confirm this?

If you’re like the rest of us, you’ll be anxiously awaiting the new update. But until that arrives, there are still workarounds.

You’re in edit mode right now, yes? Save your tool, and press ‘T’ to turn that OFF.

Now hit ‘R’ to activate the Rotate gizmo. That, Move, or Scale will all put you in Live Mode, which is hard to explain – it allows you to reposition or change parameters for the last stroke made on the canvas. You’re one step shy of dropping your tool down to Pixols, but can still go back into Edit Mode.

Imagine that everything you’ve done to that sphere was all part of the same paint stroke, and that’s where you’re at. You’ll want to experiment with actual paint strokes later, just to make sense of this. (and a note for that time: holding CTRL while you paint will group multiple strokes together for this)

Now that you’re in Live Mode, open the Draw palette, and select Persp. Instant perspective!

You can adjust the amount of perspective distortion with the Distort slider, also inside the Draw palette. (you’ll probably want to lower it to compensate for any tricks your mind played on you working from a perspective photo in your orthographic view)

Since you chose Rotate earlier, you can drag inside the Gizmo to see your model, in perspective, from all angles. Place your model using this, Move and Scale as appropriate. Set up your lights, and render with best settings.

When you hit ‘T’ again, you will jump back into Edit Mode, and your beautiful perspective will go away.

As for the lights, you do know how to turn on shadows, at least?

Render : Shadows
Render : Best

That’s about as much as I know about lighting. You may have to increase the ambient amount for your scene to match the picture, though.

if you do a search on Pixolator, look for a thread that has something like white dino shader somewhere in the name.

there is a thread where he posted a great material and light set up to get you started. You can see how he did them by examining the respective menus and tweak them to your liking. I think it would be a good material for your sculpture!

I think you know a more than nothing. You did a really good job.

I thought that the faces on top were two different renders. You almost photocopied it with your modeling. Excellence.

ThaoLe first of all…great model :+1:
I understand your frustration…as a traditinal 3-D man you want Z-brush to do what other 3-D programmes do…that will not work, sorry…!
Z-brush is something new…There is not a traditional camera, and a traditional 3-D space…in a way it works like a 3-D collage…you have to think how the end result must be, as in a illustration or painting, then you bring in your objects, or Z-tools, one at a time,or multimarked, use layers as in photoshop or a draw/paint programme.
In traditional 3-D you have lights that you position in your 3-D space together with the objects and camera( s) as said before Z-space it not the same ! Read all the threads abouth Light, and Shadows you can find…Z-shadows are not 100% correct you have to do some postproduction .
In traditional 3-D the camera makes the perspective…in Z-brush its the object that is put in perspective , so for complex scenes you have to do some thinking !
Z-brush is great but you have to learn new things to make it work for you!

Thats really nice sculpting! Well done!

Perfect! Im also on a sculpt reproduction…

You will see, but its more abstract…
Great work!

Thanks alots you guys for your input. Ctrl_Z, that is a great tip. thanks.
Here are some of the shot that comes straight from zbrush. I also did different meterials that i like instead of following the picture’s texture.

I haven’t said so earlier, but this level of detail coming from “the ball” is simply amazing. We are talking a Sphere3D rather than ZSpheres, right?

Thanks Ctl_Z, yes, it was created from 3D polymesh ball. Here are the progress shots.head_progress.jpg

Really nice work. You did an amazing job matching the reference.

Superb modelling ThaoLe! Top row material without a doubt!

I love some of your material variations partic images 3&4 in post 9 and especially the bottom one in post 11. Any chance of sharing these with us??

Yes, it’s very interesting, thank you for progress image

As i wrote above - thats agreat bit of modelling! Looking at your ref shot though - i’d say the chin on the original is a tad more prominent.

Thats nit-picking , i know but…

Great work!! Hheadside1.jpg

Really great modelling! I like the ‘dark bronze’ material in post #11 too!

Marcus

Firstly, great work!

I have a question regarding modeling with a reference picture.
How do you actually use one? Can one have a transparent layer on top,
or du you use projection to paste your texture on the sphere?

Please explain how this is made.

I

At first sight I really had to guess which of the 2 pictures is the reference. I whish i could have done that after 2 months with ZBrush o.O
If you do that after 2 months, I´m really looking forward to your work after 2 years!

Amazing likeness in anatomy, details and also material!
You did stunning work here!

greetings

Thank you guys,
that is a very nice comments you guys gave to my first zbrush model. Hope time will help me to learn more about this amazing software. For those who are interested in to know how did i do this, i just started with a 3d ball mesh and slowly sculpted it in to the model. i didn’t use any projection map for the mapping just hand painted on the blank texture. For the reference, just eyes comparation. it is hard to have the pic in different window and go back and forth between zbrush and reference window. The model took me about 3 and half hours to do spread out about over a week. I did a screen shot of the bronze material if somone interested in knowing what setup i have on the material. just a very simple set up.

Hi ThaoLe

You know you can save material as a .zmt file and post that. Screenshots don’t capture curves (if the boxes are closed).

nice modeling.
