First 3D Print

Hello there,

I’ve just created my first 3d animated character bust. It has a total of 5 layers (Hair, Head/bust, eyes, teeth, shirt). I’m having problems exporting it 3d printing on my Flashforge. When I try to merge all visible layers then “File/Optimize for 3d printing” the Active/Total Points drop from 6.2 million to 405k but the detailed head is now a block for smushed triangles… Any ideas? (See images)

I noticed ZBC does not seem to have the plugin features (like Decimation Master and 3D Print Exporter) that I think would help in this case so I just need some guidance on how to take this character and export it to STL for printing without completely destroying the object.

Thanks in advance for any advice on helping me get my first 3D print out…

I’m not sure what has gone wrong there! I think you might get better results if you use DynaMesh on the merged model before optimizing.

  1. Press Tool>SubTool>Merge Visible. This creates a new model in the Tool palette called something like “Merged_My_Model” so be sure to select it.
  2. Turn on DynaMesh. You will probably need to undo and try a higher resolution to get the best results and not lose detail. Try something like 512 first.

If you are happy with the result then you can optimize and export.

DynaMeshing also allows you to create a shell if you want so that the model is hollow. You use the IMM Primitives brush to insert a cylinder in the base of you model where you want the hole to be (so the resin can drain out). When you insert the cylinder hold Alt so that it is negative. Then press the Create Shell button below the DynaMesh button.
