Fimo - The joy of sculpting

Hi good people of ZBC!

I’ve taken a little timeout from ZB to try out the traditional medium of Fimo (like super-sculpy).

And I can tell you that its FUN!! And alos it is very easy to see how people who come from sculpting would like ZB. Its practically the same! Start with the big shapes, finish off with the deatils. Remeber to smooth for every stage (for the most time anyway).

Anyways. These images are giving me some headache because I don’t feel they bring out the details properly, but they do give u a nice look at all the ugly seams. I’ve only done three models so far. Spent about 4-5 hours on this one (which is the second one I did).

Hmm… Now I’m nearly finished. I’ll be happy to take suggestions on how to improve this guy, but I think I’m getting a bit blind the this figure myself.

I’m really anoyed that the photographs don’t bring out the subtelties in the way I’d like them to. Its not like a computer model, where you can ligth and render to your harts content. Real world lighting can be a serious bitch!

This is, btw, my first Fimo model. I spent much more time than I’d like to admitt on this considering the result. But it was my first go at it, and one has to calculate some trial and errors. Its fabulous for getting into the real topology of stuff, as well as figuring out some anatomy issues.

 Nice sculpts :+1:

nice sculpts…did you cook these when finished (to set the fimo or what did ya doo) cause im really interested at having a go at something like this myself…once again awesome sculpts

Andy

Good show!

FYI, there’s a nice miniature sculpting group on yahoo egroups.

porkSoda: yes I’ve baked them a couple of times. First I roll up a nice ball of aluminumfoil, then I wrap it in a thin layer of Fimo. Smooth it out, and bake it at 130 degrees celcius for about 15 min. And so it progresses. However I would, from my limited experience, recomend not to bake more than absolutelly neccesary. Because there will be some unpretty seams.

Anyways, thanks for the comments guys. I hope in the future there will be more posts of traditional work.

Blomsterblutt  ,

Nice sculpts you got there… I once worked with those back in Australia while studying. They were called “Sculpey Clay” over there… It’s got the same colour and texture.
The way we used to start off a sculpt model was to use hard wire to build up the skeleton then, used soft wire to get some forms out of it or if u was let’s say we’d strengthen the skeleton. Sometimes we’d also use polystyrene balls to block out the forms also. But make sure everything is rigid inside before applying a surface of “Fimo or “Sculpey””…
There are some sculpting tools which are also available and with which you can get some great smoothed surfaces…
Hope this helps

Cheers!

Kevin

Blomsterblutt,

There’s something else that i might have forgotten
How to finish the model off with some paint
Once, ur model’s done and baked… First paint your model with some primer paint and then use Accryllic paints to get the color/texture you want… But for sure it won’t be like in Zbrush  You’ll have to wait for the model to dry

Happy Sculpting Bloms!

catcha,
Kev

Hey Kev

Thanks a lot for the advice. There is so much to figure out when you move to a new medium. I´m gonna go get some wire as soon as I can, and then start working out a real skeleton for a whole figure. I think its great to use my hands for something other than a mouse and a keyboard.

I´m happy to get your oppinion, so cheers for that

C ya around

Mike

Hi Mike,

You’re more than welcome

I’m not a pro in using those ‘Sculpey’ but i have seen one of those ‘Sculpey Maniacs’ at work…Dang! It’s just amazing! :+1:

But for me, i’d rather sit in front of my pc and sculpt  hehe!
At least, that’s what i’ve started to do in the last 4-5 wks of learning Zbrush… Better than those ‘Sculpting tools’ :+1:

Cheers Mate!
