File-saving questions (sorry, y'all)

OK, I’m a professional toy designer doing mostly paint work and I’m an accomplished hand sculptor. I love Zbrush, and am picking it up very quickly.

BUT the saving system is a nightmare, as I’m sure you’re aware. It is literally easier to figure out how to sculpt incredibly complex work in this thing than it is to save and load said work.

I’m aware of the difference between tools, projects, and documents (I think), but the behavior of the system is unfathomable.

All my Zprojects are consistently greyed-out in the File menu; the only way I can load a project is to double-click it in the Finder. Recent tools and projects may or may not show up in the Lightbox, according to some whimsy I have yet to decode. When I hit cmd-S to save, it saves as a document, not a project—it doesn’t even allow the possibility to save as a project, even when using Save As—and fresh documents sometimes allow me to enter Edit mode and sometimes don’t. Why is anyone using documents anyway? Does anyone still use this thing for 2.5D at all?

Further, when loading a tool I often get an extra, bonus 2.5 tool on the canvas that I can’t clear even with cmd-N.

The number of times I’ve had to reboot the program just to clear up file nonsense is insane, even though I’m sculpting quite well in ZB. The book I own does not elucidate things, and though I subscribe to Gnomon, the file stuff is pretty cursory and I don’t have the time and patience to scrub through their 50,000 hours of video hoping to find any fuller answers.

If anyone can direct me to like some whole encyclopedia which explains the mysteries of saving your ****ing work, that would be great. Failing that, can someone just explain why my Projects are greyed-out and mostly unusable? Thanks in advance!

Out of curiosity, which version of ZBrush is this happening with? If ZBrush 2018, have you updated to 2018.1 or is it still just 2018?

Also, which version of macOS are you running?
