FBX Import: How do I get Polyselections/Polygroups from FBX into Zbrush

Hello, I was pretty exited about the FBX importer. I thought I could finally get my Polygon-selections from CINEMA 4D into Zbrush as Polygroups. But that seems not to be supported. Is there any way to get these selections in Zbrush?

Thanks for your help.

Check the export settings in Cinema 4D to see if you can export selections as Polygon Groups. They will then import into ZBrush.

We are looking into adding Selection Sets into the FBX export/import plugin and if this is practical will release an update. One consideration though is that ZBrush’s polygroups don’t allow for overlapping selections, so there may be some loss of data when importing.

Hello, Thanks for your answer. I have checked that in CINEMA. It is exporting Polyselections properly. If I reimport the FBX into Cinema I get my selections. But importing the same File in Zbrush does not import the selections.

btw. I tried FBX 2013 and FBX 2014.

That’s not what I meant. The FBX format has Polygon Groups and Selections. The ZBrush plugin currently only supports Polygon Groups, exporting/importing them as polygroups. I don’t know Cinema or what options it has for exporting the FBX format but if it is possible to export selections as Polygon Groups then ZBrush will import these. If it’s not possible to do that then you’ll have to wait for an update to the plugin. I hope that will be possible sooner rather than later.

ok…now I understood.
And I have just found a solution for me. :-). The Native OBJ exporter of c4d does not support polygroups. But there is a OBJ-Plugin for Cinema which supports that. Using that I get the Polygroups into Zbrush.
It would be much nicer to have that function in the FBX-importer, though. Waiting for an Update .
Thank you again.
