Extremely bad performance - possible bug?

Hey guys,

I’m experiencing really bad viewport manipulation performance in ZBrush lately. I have already reported it through the official support link. I’m writing it also here, maybe some of you have the same problem. I really want to find the cause.

The problem is the following: I use right-click navigation. When I manipulate the camera with ALT/CTRL+ right-click on the canvas (zoom and move especially) ZBrush feels really laggy as in the frames per second decreases excessively and the movements even lag behind the actual cursor movements. Its almost unusable with the model close-up to the camera. The reason I think this must be some form of bug and not just a general performance decrease is that when I use the navigation buttons on the UI instead of pressing ALT/CTRL on the keyboard with mouse right-click, the lag is completely gone, and everything feels much smoother - as it was most likely intended. But obviously this is not a viable way to work effectively and fast. I guess the buttons on the UI should invoke the same/similar commands for ZBrush as the ALT/CTRL+ right-click version. I do not feel such a performance decrease is normal.

(first half is the lag, second half is the button navigation with no lag)

I use ZBrush 2020.1.4 on Win10Pro (1909) 64 bit with a 4-core/4-thread i5 CPU (multicore optimization is enabled in the preferences of ZBrush and maxthreads is set to 4). My graphics card is a GTX670. All latest drivers. I have tried both a mouse and a Wacom Intuos Pro tablet with the latest drivers. No difference. Models do not have to be high poly and subtool number does not have to be high.

During further bug testing, I have observed an interesting behavior that might help to localize the problem. It looks like the problem is somehow related to the way ZBrush is handling the actual keypresses on the keyboard. I have tried to press the “Key Modifiers” in the Preferences/Utilities/Key Modifiers menu of ZBrush and it gets better with those. So for example if I press in “ALT” modifier button and try navigating (panning the view) with the right click on canvas, it feels significantly smoother. But still not as smooth and fast as the dedicated navigation buttons on the UI… so it might be a complex thing related to multiple areas. I’m really confused.

Any help is much appreciated.

Hello @dddstudio

Sorry you’re having some trouble.

The community forums are not equipped to diagnose system specific technical issues. These issues need to be reported to Pixologic Support. If you have already done this, then you’ll need to wait for them to work through this with you.

Good luck!

Have you solved any problems with poor performance when using motion rotation and scale manipulators?

No, I was unfortunately not able to solve the issue. Official support closed my ticket, they are also not able to help (but they are looking into it).

even it is unclear how this happened, there are suspicions that after the regular Windows update :frowning:

I have an up-to-date version of Win10Pro 1909. It is possible that something changed recently in the input handling of Windows.

in General, I made a clean installation of Windows pro 10 2004 and installed zbrush corel mini, the performance is the same low when using manipulators :frowning:

Oh man, bummer. I was hoping updating to Win10 2004 might solve the problem. Let me know if you find anything interesting. I’ll do the same.
