hi, lately i’ve been trying to do a biped animation with a character i created in zbrush… i wanted to know how to export the 3d model with the subdivision history i have made within zbrush and then be able to switch back and forth from each subdivision in order to create a better biped attachment for my character in 3ds max 9. i would love to have my model at subdiv 1 so i could group my polygons better with the envolope tool in 3ds max and then boost it up back to a higher resolution easy and simply so i could have a good looking model to display. If anyone would know how to export the obj with its subdivision history and knows how to toggle inbetween subdivision levels in 3dsmax it would be much appreciated …thank you.
Multi-resolution subdivision editing is a feature unqiue to ZBrush. Max does not support it. There’s no way to get multi-res models into other programs, period. They weren’t designed for it.
This is one way to end up with a mesh that’s going to be easy to skin, and have a high res mesh to render:
Export your mesh at a high subdivision level out of ZB. Then export the mesh at the lowest Sub-D. Import both meshes into max and use the low Sub-D mesh (that is rigged) as a driver mesh for the high res mesh using Skin Wrap Mod (check out max reference for more info on this).
Scratchy.

…or just use displacement maps
I did think about stating the obvious;)
displacement maps? how does that work?
i know what a displacement map does but how do u properly create one in zbrush and how would u then apply it to ur model in 3ds max 9…in my case scenario…anyhelp would be appreicated. thank u for the link though i saved it as one of my favorites because i think i could find alot of precious information with it. thank you. i know u got to like click auv and do some other stuff ill figure it out but if u could save me the aggrevation of having to search for the answer or having to search zscripts and zhelp when someone might have it on the top of thier head…
thank u though i appreciate the great gesture
My point is, it’s been discussed hundreds of times… there’s even a guide on the official zbrush wiki:
http://www.zbrush.info/site/index.php/ZBrush_to_3ds_Max
don’t mean to be blunt, but you could’ve found that information with a quick search… no need to post and wait for a response, there are instant answers at your fingertips
thank you man if i have anymore questions after i learn how to do this ill post it up for some help if i cant find it…and if i succeed ill show it to ya
