EWJ Earth Worm Jim Project

Ok Z-Brush junkies here is the situation. I am a major Earth Worm Jim fan. Have been since I was very young. I have a great base in Z-Brush and 3Ds max. My next piece, or so I would hope, would be to create Earth Worm Jim in all his buff cyber suit glory destroying the undead with extreme prejudice.

Before I even start I have come to a dilema. My understanding of human anatomy is fairly weak. I have only memorized the upper arm and legs. Where as the rest of the bodies muscle anatomy is a mystery to me.

This is where I call upon you! I am in need of help. I need references to both Earth Worm Jim, and the human anatomy. Also suggestions on topology would be nice too. I have attached an image representing what I am capable of so far using Z-Brush. To me I think it’s pretty good, but I want this EWJ piece to be even better. I HUMBLY ASK OF YOU TO HELP ME OUT! I have been looking for refrences online for ages and have come up with nothing substantial.

Please help me Z-Brush central!

PS: in return I will make this thread an entire WIP thread showing my progress and at the end I will create a tutorial in gratitude!!

You have heard of Google, right? If you search the forum you will also find plenty of anatomy and even an Earthwork Jim! I’d use zsphere’s and have your base inside 10 minutes, but I appear to be mind melded to zsphere’s.

Hey Pieisgood, I hope this helps. I am an Earthworm Jim fan as well…
I found these on the internet, using (google) Goto google.com, click on images, and then do your search if these arn’t good enough.

Again, hope this helps…

THis might help

Here are some links that I use when I need references for the human figure. Most of the sites require that you have an account but their are also some free examples. If you are truely wishing to get some good human anatomy references I would suggest getting an account at either of the bottom two sites.

I also suggest getting human anatomy books from Chapters or Amazon. Two I suggest are:
- Drawing the Human Body
- Anatomy: A Complete Guide for Artists

Hope that helps and good luck with Earth Worm Jim

Well here is what I found on my search for earth worm jim. Which I think is a great effect to go for. All your guys help is really appreciated, I actually went out today and bought an anatomy book.

I loved that old game & the show was cool too. Im interested in seeing how this one turns out. I agree with you though on the image you posted of Jim in heck with the Evil the cat in the background. I think thats a good effect to go for, as it really exaggerates the whole anatomy/musculature of his suit.

Love characters like EarthWorm Jim…

Great images within these posts.

Anatomy is tricky…I always seem to make the arms too long and the hands too big. Just takes practice to get it right. As far as face modeling goes - I would use the Zsphere tutorial that comes with the software booklet. The space suit definately should use Zspheres, as well. The Armor tutorial in the ZB book or PDF file should help immensely with your progress.

Look for to seeing the results… :+1:

Thanks you guys!

Here is the final base mesh in 3Ds max. I will now export and work in all the fine details around the eye, mouth, and overall details in the body. This should be done in good time.

Looks cool. Can you post a bigger one / closer view?

Coming along nicely. Can’t wait to see the final stage.

No problem Dark messiah. This is a bit big though.

I dont know if this helps, but Im currently in an illustration class in college. My teacher gave me a few pointers about anatomy in illustration the other day, that i think may help you with your final render / model.

:white_small_square: When making a male figure, exaggerate the muscles. I think thats apparent in the pic of Jim in hell below.
:white_small_square: Male characters should have broader shoulders & smaller waists in comparison to females, who should have a wider hip region & smaller shoulders / larger bust.
:white_small_square: The hands & face should be made about 10% larger than they really would be.
:white_small_square: Elongate the thigh to give your character a bigger / taller appearance.

Also think about lines & charater pose in your final render.

I dont mean to sound like Im nitpicking, I just loved the old EWJ, and wanna see ya do an awesome job on this one.

Your going to have to get the one eye to be much larger than the other. Very cool feature of Earth Worm Jim. Groovy!

Darkmessiah: Of course the muscles are going to be exagerated. I mean just look how manly his super suit is. I am not even in college… even though I graduated my 2006 year. This piece is primarely for getting into college and getting an internship at a game/animation studio. Don’t take your comment as nitpicking either, I accept all advice as I need this piece to be “the ****”. I won the anatomy DvD from gnomon when I went to pirates 2 user group meeting so that should help… i’ll just bulge up all the muscles I see in the video.

PS: I will post the pose concept once I find my Wacom pen (where did that thing disapear to?)

and thanks to all those who posted as well!

edit: oh right… EWJ only has four fingers… this might get strange lol

Long time no update!!

I will update tomorrow as I just got back in my apartment after it was fumigated on the 13th it took a few days and now I am finally back at my computer once again!

Well, I am all ready to make some new happy accidents and all that awesome Bob Ross fun.
