Error when importing a file - why?

Every step I take, every breath I breathe…Zbrush has some errors to throw at me…
(Is it just me? Even the simplest of tasks comes with some comment from Zbrush “oh sorry I can’t do that”)

What is strange is that I’ve changed nothing since I succeeded last time - back in October, I created a model in Rhinoceros 3D, saved as an .obj file, as a polygon mesh object, which loaded fine when I imported it into Zbrush.

But today, all of a sudden, Zbrush isn’t happy with the polygon mesh object I created in Rhinoceros.

It says "Error when importing a file " and ignores my ask to load it.

I’ve restarted Zbrush restarted my PC (Windows) and nothing - still error error error.

One thing that bothers me is when I exported the model into polygon mesh object, Rhinoceros keeps turning the object by 90 degrees in the Z-axis direction. i.e. it turns it around. See attached - this is my object imported and shown in Rhinoceros, it look like it’s placed horizontally on the ground (XY plane) but when I exported this, the original model is upright.

I really don’t know what the issue is - I can confirm it’s an issue with this particular obj because I tried importing the obj I fiddled with in October mentioned above, but once again, I literally haven’t changed anything in terms of export setting. Any idea what is going on? What are the requirements for Zbrush to allow import? Does it have to be a super simple 3d object, or something?

Hi, did you try to export/import in stl format?

Hi Nacho_Riesco,
No, I exported it (to be very precise, I made this model in Rhinoceros, then saved it as an .obj file) as an .obj and imported it as so.

To let you know, importing an .obj file created by Rhinoceros previously had not had this issue but for this model (attached and shown in the image above) in particular, Zbrush has complaints which are unclear.

By the way, I did export/save the same model as an STL and tried to import into Zbrush - still gives me the exact same error. Cannot import

Looks like the mesh has some issues, did you try to open it in a program like Netfabb or similar?

I give up - I have reconstructed the surfaces and made sure that there are no naked edges, no non-manifold edges in each of the .3dm model and the .obj model and the .stl model.

The models have no issue. It should be, effectively, flawless but ZBrush still has complaints.

Error when importing file.

It’s beyond me, this thing is waaaay too sensitive. What more can I do to make this model oh so perfect that Zbrush would be satisfied?

Oh, and this thread doesn’t let me upload neither .obj or .stl file so I have no way to share it so practiced eyes could inspect it…brilliant.

No, I do not have Netfabb (I don’t intend to buy expensive software just to cross-check a fair mesh when Zbrush is the only one complaining about it…) but I am open to any other suggestions to check on this model.

God, hours of manual reconstruction of a model and Zbrush is still on its high-horse spitting abuse…I just wish Zbrush would at least be able to do simple things like import a flawless .obj file/mesh…sigh

Could you share the file with me? You can send it to : [email protected]

Hi - I solved the issue but without really knowing why.
I tried shoving the stl file up Zbrush for a few times and, at a certain point, it just accepted it. I changed nothing to my file, but after the nth try, it just acquiesced.

Nonetheless, let me send you the file, you might find an explanation…thanks for sharing your email and offering (If the file size is too big even compressed, I’ll let you know)
