error exporting displacement maps

I’m using ZB3, and followed the tutorial @ [http://www.zbrush.info/site/index.php/ZBrush_to_3ds_Max](http://www.zbrush.info/site/index.php/ZBrush_to_3ds_Max)

My object results in 4 UV areas, and when I export the Displacement Maps using the MD2 plugin, I get an error.

Any thoughts as to what might cause this?

For starters, MD2 is a plugin for ZBrush 2, and it doesn’t work with ZBrush 3. To export a displacement map in ZBrush 3 you need to use the Tool->Displacement->[Export Displacement] feature. You’re limited to a 16bit map at the moment, but MD3 is coming out soon and will provide all of the functionality of MD2. In the meantime, if you need the full functionality of MD2, what I do is export the high resolution mesh from Z3, import it into Z2 and recreate subdivision levels. Then you can use ZMapper, ZApplink, and MD2 without any problems.

Oh Joy!!!

I really need MAX integration, but I wish there was a forum that listed everything that ZB3 can’t do now but will in the future, so I do not spend hours learnig things the wrong way.

I guess this is bleeding edge technology. Having been a member of MAX development, before it was ever released, I know how it is with this stuff.

What’s the rumor on fleshng out the toolset for this program?

Cheers,

Sterling

I’m going to try and slug it out until the new tools are available.

According to the ZBrush to Max document, if I were using DM2:

For all 32-bit maps exported from ZBrush using Multi Displacement 2, the Extrusion Strength in Mental Ray will be the same; just set it to 220. However, if you didn’t go through MD2, you’ll still need to set the alpha gain based on the alpha depth factor from ZBrush
Is “extrusion Strength” the same as “alpha gain”?

How do I know what my alpha depth factor is? Is it 16 as in 16 bits?
