Error Encountered While Importing a File

Hi Peeps,

Since having ZBrush 4 I started seeing the following error message when importing Wavefront .obj: “Error Encountered While Importing a File”.

I’m trying to import geometry from Rhino V4 (which I have had no problems with in the past, until upgrading Z Brush). I don’t want to sculpt the imported geometry, instead I need it as a scaled framework, to build my Z Brush elements around. I’m working in manufacturing, so I need to mix organic parts with tolerance, structural ones.

My work around at the moment, is to take a render of my structural geometry and use the image planes to guide me. However, this is not ideal and quite frankly a rubbish ‘make-do’.

When creating the .obj I have tried “export .obj” straight off the NURB geometry. I’ve also tried converting the NURB geometry to a basic MESH and quadrangulated it (as I know Z-Brush tends to be happier with quads than triangles). I’ve then exported the clean quadrangulated mesh as an .obj.

Hope you can help! ta

There are new options in Preferences > Importexport that didn’t exist in ZBrush 3.5R3. Maybe one of the new options is preventing you from importing.

Cheers for the suggestion zber2. I tried it and it failed to work.

HOWEVER… somehow you got me thinking and I seem to have found the solution. It appears that I can’t import the model from Rhino V4 at 1:1 scale. Instead I need to shrink the model down to around 1mm in overall height before I export it as an .OBJ.

In the instance the problem is resolved… but I have not tested it on any other models as yet, so it could be a fluke.

It was a fluke! Made some changes to my base model and I’m back to square one… it wont import!

Has Z-Brush got a bug or something?

I don’t use Rhino, but I have never had any import issues, but if you say it only started doing it in ZBrush 4 then it might be something in that. You should start a support ticket if you don’t get any answers soon.

Netfabb studio is a tool for working with obj and stl files. It is similar to Magicks. There is a free version that is actually quite useful. It will analyze an obj or stl file and do repairs. There is documentation and tutorials on their website. For the free version you just have to wait ten seconds for it to open as a reminder to upgrade. It is worth it. http://www.netfabb.com/

I’m having the same problem…did anyone find an answer for this?
