Empty subtools in ZTL file causing CRASH

I am using Zbrush 4R8 P2

I have a ZTL file that somehow contains a bunch of empty subtools. If I select any of these empty subtools, Zbrush crashes. I have hidden all of these empty subtools and tried using SubTool master to delete invisible subtools. This also crashes Zbrush.

Any thoughts?

Ideally, I’d like to simply save only the Visible subtools as a new Tool. But I cannot find how to do this.

These empty subtools are bloating my file size. It is over 1GB. See the image below, I have highlighted the problem subtools.

Thanks in advance!

Huh, that IS weird.

Your version of Zbrush is several major versions out of date, though. Be sure to upgrade–it’s free for registered users, and all sorts of things can break in obsolete versions.

You CAN merge the visible subtools though. Toggle visibility off for all but the target subtools, and make sure they all have the same level and number of subdivision level so they can be split cleanly afterward. Then in the subtool > merge palette, hit “merge visible”. This will create a new merged version of those tools in the tool palette (not in your original tool). Those tools can be split back into separate subtools with the options in the Subtool > Split menu.

In the current version, this can also be done easily with the folder system.

Thank you so much for your reply. It worked like a charm.
We’ll likely update soon. But mid-project software updates are always a bit scary.

Because ZBrush 2019.1 is a new installation rather than an incremental update, it can reside on the same computer as 4R8, without any impact. In fact, it even has a new serial number. So the two versions are totally unaware of each other. This means that you can install and test the new version without affecting anything with the old.

The only thing you can’t really do is move native-format files back and forth between the versions. Newer versions can read native-format files from earlier versions but earlier versions can only read export files (such as OBJ or MA) from newer releases.
