Dynameshing extracted subtool causes holes

Hey guys,

I’ve searched and searched on this and cannot get to a solution that works for me.

I have a sword hilt that I want to separate into two subtools and dynamesh. I’m extracting with 0 thickness and ‘double’ is turned off.

When I dynamesh the resulting subtools they become riddled with holes.

The one theory I have is that the original object was double sided which means that even though ‘double’ is turned off when extracting a piece of it, it still has thickness which causes the holes. In this case is there a way to delete the inner portion of the model to make a one sided shell?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hey Feracon, if there’s hidden geo inside the object simply go down to the Polygroups palette in your Tools menu.

Click Auto Groups, and turn on Polyframe (shift + f). Now if you ctrl+shift click on the outer mesh to hide it, you’ll then see if there is indeed any hidden geo inside it. Turn on double sided also, to get a clearer picture of all angles.
Basically if your outer mesh can become hidden, then there is in fact geo inside it, it may be tiny.

So to delete the geo you don’t want, while the outer mesh is hidden(which should all be one polygroup), use ctrl+shift and drag down your pen on the tablet, or mouse, to invert the visible objects.

Now press Delete hidden, Tools > Geometry > Modify Topology > Delete Hidden button

The easier way to split the Hilt into two pieces after you’ve gotten rid of hidden geo is to use the slice curve to separate the two regions into different poly groups (turn off perspective).
Then duplicate this subtool and delete the top from the first, and the bottom from the second(using delete hidden method above). You can then if needed close the holes using Tools > Geometry > Modify Topology > Close Holes button.

If you want to Dynamesh them again, just use Merge Down in the subtool palette. Best to turn on Groups, in the Dynamesh menu, so they stay as separate pieces, and then Dynamesh.

Hope that helps, Cheers ~

Bangers,

Thanks for taking the time to write such a thorough solution, it fixed the issue! Hugely helpful, thanks again.

Great, thanks, and glad I was able to help sort it. Happy sculpting :+1:
