hi guys!
have been using zbrush for quite awhile now and just something that i always wondered about.
Dynamesh resolution is basically relative to the model’s size right?
For example, a basic cube:
a 2x2x2cm cube model in dynamesh resolution of 128 would result in a 98,306 poly mesh
a 4x4x4cm cube model in dynamesh resolution of 128 would result in a 393,218 poly mesh
So my current workflow for designing weapons for example:
I would usually block out the main shapes in real world scale 1:1 (just to avoid things being too big or too small when this gets 3d printed for real props production), then scale up the design by 3 times so that the dynamesh density is high enough for details and clean hard surface cuts. When everything is approved, I reduce the size of the ztool by 3 times again, so that it matches back at the real world 1:1 scale.
Is there a way for me to set the units in ZBrush, so that the larger (3 times) ztool becomes the 1:1 scale? so that I don’t need to scale things up and down just to achieve the dynamesh density that I require.
BTW i’ve had cases where my 1:1 subtools are able to dynamesh at high density even at 128 resolution. I’m not sure if it’s a glitch or something, because usually without scaling up, my subtools can’t dynamesh with high enough density. The issue goes on to when I bridge into Keyshot, the model is so large that its larger than the default Keyshot sphere environment. My way of fixing this is inserting my ztool into a default ZBrush ztool (ie: the Nickz_humanMale.ztl). This will somehow fix the weird scale issue and import into Keyshot at an expected size than something crazy large.
hope this makes sense.
thanks in advance!
