draw size hotkeys stop working

I’ve done several forum searches and read through the entire “Questions & Troubleshooting for ZBrush 4R7” thread to see if anyone else ran across this, but didn’t find anything related; so please forgive me if the answer is somewhere else, and point me to it if you would be so kind. I actually posted this in that thread first, but noticed there are some posts before mine going back to at least a few months ago that do not seem to have been answered, so I don’t think it’s being monitored anymore…

I recently updated to 4r7 from 4r2 (I’ve had zbrush for a number of years without really having the time to dive in and learn the program - this is sad, I know).

I was finally able to get a cintiq, and after a long difficult time of troubleshooting, I managed to get the drivers installed correctly to recognize the new device; unfortunately, I had to blow away all of my express key settings from my intuos 4 in the process, which I set up several years ago when I first dabbled in zbrush. So, I’ve been setting up express keys from scratch in preparation of following some tutorials (which I started setting up before I actually remembered zbrush was out of date). I realize I’ll probably change them once I get to using zbrush, but I need something there initially.

I ran into a few issues after updating:

First - I noticed that the “[” and “]” hotkeys to adjust the draw size only work one time each before they stop functioning altogether… only restarting zbrush seems to make them work again; however, they each stop working after a single use. I also tried manipulating the draw size slider to see if it would “refresh” the hotkey or something, but it didn’t seem to.

To be clear, I can still adjust the draw size with the slider, but the two hotkeys do not work (neither on my touch strip, nor on my keyboard).

Second - in 4r2, I had a hotkey set up on my touch strip to adjust the focal shift size with the “9” and “0” keys. Now, I don’t think this is a standard hotkey because it took some digging to even find it again in 4r2 - I found it in the “Zplugin” menu under “Misc Utilities” which seems to be different now in 4r7.

Since I set up those intuos express keys so long ago, I honestly do not remember what I did to get it, but I suspect it was downloading a plugin and setting up those hotkeys through the plugin menu item… Why is there not a hotkey for the focal shift (and z intensity, for that matter) by default?

Anyway… the misc utilities seems to adjust the incremental value of the draw size with the standard “[” and “]” hotkeys (currently set to a value of 4 instead of 10), but it no longer has buttons/sliders for focal shift, z intensity, or rgb intensity. Is it possible to set up some hotkeys to increase/decrease the focal shift? If so, how? OR is there a better way than using some hotkeys for a touch strip with a cintiq?

Third - This is just a minor oddity… not really a huge problem (and I’m not even sure if it’s 4r7 specific) - whenever I use “store config” and reopen zbrush, the menu items stored in the left and right trays reverse their order… It’s not a huge deal because I can just store the config again and they’ll be in the intended order from then on - like I said, it’s just odd - looks like the list of items in the trays is getting written/read in reverse order for some reason. I don’t really need a fix for that one; just letting the developers know if it’s not been mentioned before.

My primary concern is the draw size not functioning, but I would also like some assistance with getting some focal shift adjustment to work - thank you for taking the time to read the post and for any assistance you give.

  1. Simply re-assign the hotkeys. Ctrl+Alt+click on the <<Brush button in the Zplugin>Misc Utilities sub-palette abnd the press the ‘[’ key. Also assign the ‘]’ to the Brush>> button and then store the hotkeys by pressing Preferences>Hotkeys>Store. You can set the increment slider to what you want and it will automatically keep the change.

  2. There’s a plugin by Wyrdesigns here that will do the trick. Simply unzip the file and then copy the HotkeyFocalS_ZInt.zsc file to you ZStartup/ZPlugs64. It will add buttons to the Zplugin>Misc Utilities menu just like Draw Size which you can then assign hotkeys to.

  1. That’s one of ZBrush’s little quirks. You can arrange the palette in reverse order before storing the config.

HTH,

Awesome - that all worked beautifully! Thank you so much for the assistance!
