Dragon creature

This is my first post, been teaching myself ZB2 over the summer, this is the first decent thing I done. I’ve been working on him for the last couple of weeks. Base mesh from Maya, details in Zbrush, posed in Maya and rendered with Mental Ray. all C and C welcome.

Wuu, i really like the render of the face (the close up). Hope to see more updates

Ron Harris - I painted 2 transparency maps using the simple brush and the double sided pickup option in projection master, then in Maya I created a seperate UV region for each wing to eliminate symmetry. More updates probably tomorrow

Very cool ! only crit i have is the region where the wingskin meets the body, too blobby. For the rest, good job !

this is pretty cool! I like the translucent neck scales a lot. The coloring looks a bit dodged for the full character views but really nice for the closeup. Its not finished is it? The tail seems a bit thick, but anything is possible.

Sadicus - I checked out Ral Partha, you’re right one of his figures had very similar angles and coloring, his designs are a bit stronger than mine though, I’m actually taking some of the structural differences I saw in his models into account for the next updates. Thanks a ton.

Soyseitan - I think your right, I was going for musculature but I think its a little flabby, think I’ll narrow it towards the body, thanks.

Womball - thanks the scales were definitely the most challenging part of the design so far although I 'm finding some issues with the wings as I extend them all the way, I think I might have to repaint them a little. Also I rendered this guy in passes so I think the raw color pass may be getting a bit washed out by some of the other passes, I’ll play around with that when I get some more renders.

If anyone has any suggestions about color, I would be happy to try some stuff I’m honestly a little blocked in that area. I think I need to give the legs a bit more care, and maybe the torso.

Definintely some good feedback, I should have some thing a little different for the next update, although I am working on a G4 Powerbook so it may take a while to get the passes rendered out.

Could you show the wireframe of the model, I like the colors on the head.

This dragon has seen many wars. Might put an arrow or two hanging off him, maybe some souvenirs of knights he’s eliminated from the food chain. :smiley:

Heres the wire, I definitely pushed some areas like the breast beyond the edge flow, I ended up exporting the cage at sub level 2 after I added the scales on the breast and neck, will have a new render in a minute here…

heres another render with a few changes and a slightly different composite solution. still a bit more tweaking though. I’ll respond more later, but I’d better get back to work

fixed a few seams and a few other little things. The only other thing I can think of at this point would be to hook up some SSS especially on the wings but can’t seem to find anything for Maya 6.0, mental ray keeps crashing, maybe I don’t have enough RAM. I think I’ll start something new and come back to it in a couple days. Thanks to all for your kind words.

Soyseitan - I did fix the blobbiness on the back, but I just haven’t rendered it yet.

tomilluminati -maybe when I got more time, that would be cool to add a little narrative touch.

I like it! Please take this as a compliment: I think it would not look out of place in a Toho Studios Godzilla movie!

Just one thing: I think you should bleed the wing colour out into the transp. map hidden part of the texture, to remove the white seam at the edges of the tatters.
