Draeke: Spectral Harbinger of the Orbital Guild

Hi all,

Here’s a new image that I just completed during a two week ‘vacation’… I caught a cold and had to stay home.

There was no original design, as I just felt like messing around with Zbrush in the beginning and made the character first… Once I had him done, I did some sketches and brainstorming for ‘who’ the character is and then ended up with this (Zbrush/Maya/Bodypaint/Mental Ray). Hope you like it!

Amazing character, great textures, but there is something about the background that bothers me, maybe to add some fog or smoke or something similar, he doesnt strike me as a kinde of a nice guy and all the bad guys need a bit of a ground fog at least

Great work

Very nice work as usual Alex! I saw this over on CGTalk but good to see the hi res version here :+1:

Heya Alex!

Cool work… but really impressed by the environment, supercool!

And you know… you need to relax your fingers during your ‘vacations’.

Take care

Victor

Very enjoyable comp (as usual) - really dig the environment most of all

  • ton of detail here from the paneling and grate work on the floor to the
blurry reflective plane behind him (are those hooded blue-faced characters
    reflected on the right?)

Hi Alex! Beautiful piece! Great sculpt, background and texture work! Cool that even the reflections in the background reveal a bit more of a possible storyline! :+1: !

MITrAndir: I did actually think about adding some ground smoke/fog, funny you mention that. To be honest I think I didn’t more because I didn’t feel like dealing with the added render time of nicely done wispy volume rendering. Oi.

Captain Sensible: Thanks!

ilusiondigital: Heh, well for me this did feel like relaxing. Tried watching TV but ugh…

Super Glitcher: Yeah, that is the guild. Draeke is receiving plans for his next mission.

Etcher: Thanks… for these kind of environment pics, I like for a story to be implied, even though it is still up to the viewer to interpret it. I think it makes it much more fun… like, what are those balls for? Why do they plug in? Perhaps they are message/data devices… and perhaps Draeke is a messenger. (hence Harbinger).

Hiya…

Here's what the character looks like in Zbrush... w/o textures. This turnaround was made before I ended up moving to Maya to build the environment, so that I could do some sketches on top of it for what the bg could be. My new digital frame!
So I had this made for the Sketchtheatre show at the Gnomon Gallery to hang on the wall and show sketchvids, but now that the show is over… it is my new killer frame. You just can’t compare a print to this in any way… It has always bothered me that we spend all this time making our stuff on a screen but then in the end people see it in a way that is not quite how you intended it. Unfortunately, it is an expensive thing to do… but one day we will have a show in the gallery where all the art will be displayed this way… one day. Now I need to find a place to hang it that has a plug nearby.

It is using a Dell 2407 24" display at 1920x1200… needs to be a good one like that due to the viewing angle issue. Cheaper monitors cause the image to look solarized when seen from angles as some of you probably know, but this one can be seen even from extreme side angles. I’ve also researched 3rd party digital frames but they all suck compared to this as they use cheaper screens and run at lower resolutions. Plus, for this size they are rare and are not that much cheaper.

The frame was made by Allan Jeffries, a framing shop in LA on 3rd Street. I think they did an awesome job.

Now imagine this playing a looping animation… Oi. I need to start animating my images!

Are those creatures reflected in the glass? It looks as though he’s being watched by a few characters.

hahaa…what an idea man…

great display, I should think about something similar:D

Now imagine it being a 3d monitor, so not only would it be in brilliant rgb colors and animated but it would be a glasses-free 3d piece of art as well.

Something along these lines:

Amazing work Alex!
Love the atmosphere of the scene!
And these guys reflected in the glass… I dunno… It gives something really special to the scene! Amazing!

Cool, I made three Frames for large Plasmas this year here in NYC. If they Display Art they are nearly indistinguishable from a good print in a good frame. Caught a few by surprise. Which is the intention of the owner 8). I also made an endless animation of a portrait where the eyes move subtly… That is very creepy.

What a render Alex !
Like i say in your Cg gallery ! An amazing work !
YOu should take holidays every day

Again it looks awesome ,the athletes foot syndrome skin(moved on from dry foot) is grossly perfect.Love the frame also, cool idea!
