Hi folks!,
When using ZBrush does your computer sometimes freeze up and need a reboot?. It happens to me regularly and so I’m just trying to work out if my system is unstable or if it’s ZBrush being a pain.
Cheers!

ZBrush is not an unstable app, but it is possible to ask it to do more than your system is capable of.
What are your system specs? What are your settings in the Preferences>Mem and Preferences>Performance menus?
Hiya Aurick!,
The freeze seems totally random and will sometimes occur even on very low resolution models (1000 polys). So I’m just trying to figure out where to start investigating. I don’t want to be spending ages reinstalling my operating, replacing hardware or trying several different drivers etc only to find out that it was ZBrush all along.
My Zbrush settings are default and I have a poweful system (quad core) and can run an intensive game like Crysis with no problems at all.
Well, if your settings are at the default you’re only letting ZBrush use 256 MB of your system’s RAM. What may be happening is that ZBrush is frequently having to compact memory, and you’re assuming that’s a system freeze. It’s not. It’s just a routine that ZBrush does when it has to write to the hard drive, and it’s normally done in a few moments.
Preferences>Mem>Compact Mem should be set to about 256 MB less than your system’s RAM. But if you have a 32-bit version of Windows, Compact Mem should be set no higher than 2048.
Thanks for the tip, Aurick. I doubt it’s that but I’ve changed it to 1000.
When my system freezes it totally dies. I can’t move my mouse or do anything. I’ve even tried waiting 20 minutes and nothing…
It wouldn’t sculpt if I put 4000 volts through it.
run a memory test…

Sounds like you’ve got a dodgy configuration… hardware or software.
For what it’s worth, ZBrush 3.12 is incredibly stable on my machine. It’s been up and running (without quitting or restarting) for 8 days now. Not a single crash.
the only time I have ever had zbrush crash is when trying to do a zsphere rig or when I open up a file someone has given me that is corrupted
