Do I really need to start with a low poly mesh?

I was wondering If I really need to have a low poly mesh because I just started out with a 3d sphere and worked on that while raising the poly count when needed? I just started about 4 days ago and have learned alot. ZBrush is alot of fun but so so much more to learn. I have not even got into texturing yet and that is like beyond me for now.

Can I reduce the poly count on my final mesh?

I will try and attach a picture of what I’ve did so far (WIP).

My question is based around texturing later because I have not gotten into that part yet. I would like to use photoshop for painting.

A Sphere3D and any other primitive object can have its polygons reduced using Tool>Geometry>Optimize. This will not give as good results as starting with a lower resolution version that you convert to a polymesh and then work with through multi-resolution subdivision editing.

As for what you NEED, that depends on what you’re going to be doing. If you plan to render the model in another program, you can’t have too many polygons or the other app will choke. If you plan to render it in ZBrush, the model already has spherical UV mapping applied. You can just paint your texture.

Why Photoshop instead of Projection Master? For that matter, why not Projection Master together with Photoshop via ZAppLink?
