Djemila: Roman Ruins Study

Hi All, first post to this forum. I wanted to push my zbrush skills after seeing all the amazing work being done with it.
here are the results, for now. I have to put it down but will pick up later to make a surrounding environment. Modeled in Maya, textured mostly in photoshop, with cavity, smoothness and peaks and valley maps pulled from zbrush.
Crits most welcome! thanks

Brian

k, here’s the whole sordid tale. first couple are the reference pics I found of this place, which is in Algeria.

i did a drawing in photoshop, then a black and white painting based on the drawing.

then I decided I would model and sculpt it. I modeled a brick in maya, and basically bricked the whole thing out. Crazy? maybe, but, this allowed very easy sculpting in brush, as I grouped the bricks (which I culled the backs and sides of as much as possible) into sections, imported in zbrush, then broke into subtools based on poly groups. Then I just moved from brick to brick, loading up alphas to get a general, subtle rockiness, and wrecking the corners of the brick.

contintued…

then on to text. painting. isolating each group, I grabbed cavity, smoothness, and peaks and valley maps, exported to photoshop through zap plink. Fill with a dark color first. Using base rock textures for color and grunge maps + pulled maps from geo as masks, texture it up. Since I did mainly front projections, I had to go back and polypaint touch up the sides of things. Could use some more love, but, probably as far as I’m going to take it this time

Thank you for posting this wonderful piece.
Thank you for the workflow.
Excellent work.

Thanks guys! as far as attention goes, I didn’t really expect much, as environment pieces don’t seem to be what sells here
but, it’s the work that’s important. Thanks again for the kind words. I’ll post more later, but, it will be a few months.

I wouldn’t say it. You never know.
