Displacement projection brush

Hi there!

I am struggling to find nice brush for displacement projection. Something similar to the one shown in the video below.

Non of the brushes can project float values with mid 0.5 on the mesh. What ever I am doing it is always going up or down (with alt) with bulge ( like standard brush).
Is it possible to project raw displacement data through Spotlight?

I know I could project just the color information, mask by intensity and then inflate but this is:
a) too much clicking
b) only up or down, never both with mid value set

Until now I was using DragRect but I am missing the precision and speed of projection like in the video above.

Use Spotlight and turn off MRGB, RGB and M.

Turning off material and color projection won’t change how my displacement is projected and this is not what I am asking.

I want to project 32 bit displacement map on a model. Right now if I project my map only as Zadd, Zbrush is taking values and pushing it out with a bulge from the brush and it is never up and down without brush bulge.

I want specify my mid value for the map and project that without other unnecessary data.

Hi @Xaia

The Alpha midpoint for the selected Alpha can be adjusted in Alpha > Modify > Mid Value.

Hi @Spyndel
I want to use spotlight projections, not alphas. Changing “Alpha” mid value won’t change anything since I am not using any alphas.

If you want to eliminate the bulge, turn Focal Shift slider to -100. As far as I know, you can’t use 32 bit displacement maps in ZBrush. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I apologize. Your terminology was a bit confusing.

Good luck!

@zber2

Well yes, it will eliminate the bulge but it will still project only up not respecting the values which is the point of this topic.

So basically it is impossible to project displacement in zbrush? (I’ve been using zbrush for over 10 years and maybe I simply missed something)

Basically I want to get the same result as I would use dragRect with alpha but I want to project that using whatever I can project map with.

Same as in the video with Mudbox

Sorry, but the video doesn’t really help to get your point across as it explains absolutely nothing. With the information you are giving, I don’t understand the point you are trying to get across. Maybe someone else. Good luck!

@zber2

Ok to illustrate the problem a bit better here are two videos.

First one is showing the result I want to get (and the result I would get in mudbox projection). I am using dragRect where I can set the alpha and mid point.

The second one is showing what I am getting using projections in zbrush.

I want simply use the map, tell zbrush that the 0.5 value it’s my mid (do not project anything) and then everything above this value goes up and everything beneath this value goes down.
