Displacement map creation

Hi,

Took my time using the alpha brushes to make some nice wrinkles in a pair of pants I made. I imported that using GoZ but Poser is not really showing allot of detail so my next idea to make that happen is to make a Displacement map. Well I NEED the pants to be at a higher resolution for all the details to be sharp but ZBrush keeps telling me I have to lower it down to base.

So then I saved out the pants at the hi rez and started ZB over and imported in! Well the program is STILL telling me that. Makes no sense. They are at the base resolution, this version at least, so why am I still getting that message?

Thanks for any help!

Richard

Hello @RAMWolff

A displacement map is the difference in detail between the highest resolution subD level, and the export level geometry. A mesh with only a single level of subdivision, or set to the highest subdivision level, cannot generate a displacement map because there is no difference.

In order to create a displacement map you will need to export some lower subdivision level of geometry, generate a displacement map for that geometry from the high res detail, and apply the map to that lower rez geometry in your target application. The map will capture the difference in detail between the export level geometry, and the highest level of subdivision.

Is there a video showing me this. I’m sorry but my old brain is confused! :no_mouth:  :sleepy:

My brain is working correctly. I just used the Reconstruct Subdiv and got what I needed. Done. Thanks for the help! :grinning:
