Displacement map creation and resolution

Been doing a bunch of displacement map tests and have a question - are displacement maps similiar to normal maps in that the higher the model resolution the more accurate the map ? I’m getting good results but they’re not as sharp as the original detail and wanted to know if upping the subdivision level just for generating the map is going to help ? Are we essentially talking about a 1:1 ratio with a single poly creating a single greyscale value for the map for each polygon region ?

Higher resolution meshes will produce higher quality maps. This is actually the purpose of the DPSubPix slider – it adds additional resolution to the model for purposes of creating the map, at a price of longer calculation times.

What kind of calculation times are we talking about here? What is an average calculation time for fairly precise displacement map?

Of course it depends on many things but I just wanted to know what kinds of times ppl usually get…

Worse case for me so far has been about 6 hours using the maximum settings for size and acuracy.

I think Adaptive speeds up the process compared to DPSubPix.

Problem is Adaptive crushes Zbrush when I generate 4096 * 4096px displacement maps.
I want to know how I can make the 4096pix maps with Adaptive?

My computer has P4 3.0G CPU and 1.5G of ram.
