Displacement Error - Is my problem with MAYA settings?

Hi Guys, Firstly i would like to say this is 1 of the most informative and constructive sites i have ever visited & would like to thank everyone for there hard work and amazing artwork that makes me extremly envious, I’m still new to tha Game - so go easy please, lol

I have trawled thru these forums for the past 2 weeks and still cant seem to figure out my problem. I downloaded the DISPLACEMENT maps video tutorial which did help me alot but i still cant seem to get the full displacemnt detail that i do in Zbrush.

I am using MAYA 7 & at the moment i have a downgraded system :frowning: AMD 2100+ 1GB Ram & Win XP pro & a 9600XT vid card ( just incase somthing could be with the specs) only untill the Ati R520 get released with Crossfire

This is for a game character & short Animation
Ok i import the model from Maya into Zbush set a morph target ( took me 4 goes to realise you need the morph as it didnt match up & with further searching ) I then create the the subdivisions to around 500,000 Polys i have taken it to 2 Million aswell and did all the details etc. I Switched the Morph back to Original then Flip the V axis & make DPsubpix at 2 & the map size 1024 & 2048 & 4096 ( tried all 3) export the alpha/DisMap out change to RGB in Photoshop and then import the DIsMap into Maya - I have also imported the model, i have tried both the original model from MAYA and also the final model ( lowest division switched morph ) from Zbrush same effect error happening

Here are my test renders.

This is what it should look like = ZBrush Render

[color=black]As you can see there is not the same deformation in the model & there are sharp edges etc that shouldnt be there??? Any & all advice will be taken, Thanks in advance to anyone who helps

If you’ve trawled the forums, I guess you’ve found this thread http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=20310 . If not, that’s the place to go for displacement map info. Good luck … it’s a cool looking model!

Hi Moochie, yes that indeed is the link i went to & downloaded the tutorial video from. I just cant seem to figure out whyi am not getting the full diplacement, if you llok at the shoes etc they are rounded and smooth and no effect of the Fat Shoe Laces etc

The model ofcourse is unfinished but i wanted to test the waters with how to do displacemnts so i could further work & complete my model. Am i better to just try A normal map for a game character instead of Displacemnet mapping?

Thanks for your help. most appreciated

Any other idea’s??? Anyone?

what are your setting for the subd tessalation.

Hi Dagobert, i did manage to get it a little better when i turned on the “turn quads into tri’s” option. I am beginning to wonder if this is because i modelled this character in between 2 packages MAYA & 3D MAX ( at college i had to export as OBJ to each package as using MAYA 7 - then having to go back to MAYA 6.5 wouldnt work, so i took it into 3D MAX 7)

I cant see any difference when i changed the tesselation it was currently at 60,000 tri’s & i pumped it up to 180,000 and still couldnt see any difference,

Heres a pic of when i changed the Quads to tris

SO as you can see it’s alot better but still doesnt seem to have the more defined definition on the shoes and the forearms etc???
Anymore idea’s at all you can think of I am definetly open to any & all suggestions

may be you could test something, create a subd shpher and map your diplacement map to it.
do you check you alpha intensity

as i say in my Mail you don t make a proper uv layout for you obj so you get no displacement map
good luck
