Displacement & Bump maps?

I was just wondering if there is any good websites on how to create displacement maps and bump maps using a normal 2d art program. I just want to understand the gray scale thing and how it all works. I have Deep paint 3D and that is all I ever used to make bump maps but I would like to experiment making displacement maps.

Take a look at the fun Zeeble thread in the tutorial section. That is nothing else than displacement painting. The greyscale is representing the intensity of the displacement of geometry. Displacement maps are being used to distort geometry along it’s surface normal (vector), in my tutorial it’s either the direction given by the ‘size’ parameters(xyz) in which case it is a spherical displacement or along it’s normal using the inflate (first application, simply ‘outward’).
Go, paint a ‘Zeeble’ and you painted a displacement map.
