Displace/Normal Maps add hours to MRay render? (images/stats of sculpt provided)

Hi all,

I’ve come to the render stage of my sculpt and I am easily able to crossover via GoZ to render using Mental Ray in Maya. I am able to render with just UV textures applied in minutes, though once I add just a displacement map (even without a normal map applied) it adds 5+ hours to my render time…? is this normal? I dont think my sculpt is detailed enough to really warrant such an escalated time difference. Cant even get a render out with a displacement map on preview/draft render settings. Is my hardware that out of date or is there someting else im not doing?

What size are your maps?

All of my maps are 2048 X 2048, Depth = 16. Using grouped UV tiles. Ive also tried reducing to 1042 with the same results…

Also my displacement map preview is somewhat scrambled. The same when i view in Hypershade…

That’s really weird. Did you change any settings in Mental Ray? For example things like anti-aliasing and sample rates? I assume no since you said this happens on draft settings.

If you want you can post a link to the scene file and I can render it on my machine to narrow down if its your hardware or not.

Render settings are all pretty much standard as far as i can tell. Ill link you up to the Maya scene file and also the ZBrush tool file.
