ZBrushCentral

Dept. of Doofus

Hello,

Last month, an internet company held a t shirt contest. $10,000 for first place. Whooptie doo.

I entered, figuring with ZBrush and the ultra cool looking cubical skins at my disposal, I’d win for sure.

Out of 1666 entries (bad omen) I didn’t even make the top 25.

Of course.

Clearly, I’m a doofus.

And here’s my entry . . .

The rousing back (154k, so it takes about 1 min to load):

… and the thrilling front (134k, so another minute of you’re life lost forever):

The central figure was posed and rendered and Lightwave. But, the ultra cool cubical skins are courtesy of ZBrush.

Stoopid or cool?

I dunno.

You tell me.

Please.

I feel rotten for having entered and not even made a showing.

To make things worse, I don’t think I’ll ever be a jockey the Kentucky Derby  .

Thanks a lot.

A down hearted post indeed Amigo. :frowning:

Accentuate the positives - your images tell stories they do not sell idents.

Now pull yourself together.

boozy floozy,

I’m loosing it, man!

I think I’ll abandon the cubical skins and Lightwave, and just stick to making heads, and pugs, and underwear, and all sorts of gooey curs with ZBrush.

Tell stories.

Stay away from commercial endeavors.

Aighhh!

Thanks for your input.

U can’t really blame a software… U must give ur best and take any place but with ur head up and knowing the effort u took… am sorry if that is kinda harsh, take care.
good luck on ur race.

Aztec…solja,

I don’t blame Z, nor anyone else.

My failure is my own doing.

I’m down as I spent quite a bit of time on that, and at one point I thought it was fairly good.

Lack of responses here and elsewhere makes it obvious that that is not the case.

Tough luck.

Time for something different, then.

Perhaps if I join a pie eating contest, and throw my pies at the other contestants, I’ll feel better.

Thank you for your post.

no, don’t take it that way look…who am I to tell u this but I think u should keep on going. always!

Aztec…solja,

By all means, tell me what you think.

I think a lack of response is by far more hideous than somebody taking the time to just say yeah or blech.

Then again, since this forum is attracting many highly talented (and hopefully well-paid) professional illustrators, I suppose images like this are hard to say anything about as its not readily appearent I did anything other than slap together a few cubical skins. Kinda like a Poser artist looking for respect as a modeler.

Ambivalence is purgatory .
Indifference is hell.

haha well u see that as long as u know how much is worth and u put the best to compleate it many will see that, talking about pictures or projects. I post on any cause I do like the work of others.
Hehe well take care nice pics…

I used to manage a company, one of the departments was silk screening, tee shirt were also printed.

Why this was rejected…

Too busy looking…too involved…difficult to read from 10 feet way… a print registration nightmare for teeshirts. Needs to be stronger.

The image though is a great little illustration that could possibly be used in a magazine…with more prominence on the text.

Any competition is tough…a consenus of opinion with participants in most competitions will tell you that more often the winning entry is not the most popular.
With Tee shirts…like anything…you need to know the trade.

You cannot fail having tried. The worst that happened here is you learned some new things about the prog, about designing something, and about yourself.

Denture, as Ed pointed out T-shirt design is all about simplification and visual clarity. You have created a fine illustration but have not approached the brief from the clients’ perspective.

Simplifying the illustration to just black and white will show you problem areas with legibility etc.

When I say that your images tell stories I most certainly mean that as a positive. There are many commercial outlets for illustrators who’s work contains a narrative.

Your personal confidence and knowledge may benifit greatly from a period of study in a graphic arts and visual communication college.

All of us have to learn this stuff, so please don’t beat yourself up Amigo.

Hooray for ZBrush Central!

Aztec…solja,

I’m glad you do post. Any input is encouraging.

ed_the_atom,

I’m very grateful to your post and explaination of why this was rejected. I agree entirely with each point.

It’s deeply annoying to be cast aside without any explaination.

So, thank you for your insight. It’s extremely uplifting.

boozy floozie,

Aha! Now it’s obvious to me I’ve made a mess!
Blinded by greed, I 'twere.

Prior to this contest, I’d been trying half heartedly to write and illustrate a short story. Three thousand words. Seventeen 11 X 8.5 inch images.

I took the writing as far as I could (time permitting), then made a cover with Creature House’s Expression 3 (an Illustrator-type app, since bought off and given away for free to Mac users by Microsoft).

Then I stalled. Starting wandering about aimlessly. Entering contests and getting indescriminately loaded.

And I’ve recently had a period of study in graphic design and print making.

One of my prefessors admitted that he wouldda flunked me, “like that,” snap of the fingers, if I hadn’t made him laugh.

Another said I was very strange but, maybe, with a little more work, I could succeed at illustration.

So, my personal confidence is shot :).

But, as evident with the kind people who take time to post here, I believe there is a splinter of hope.

So, to aztec…solja, ed_the_atom, and boozy floozie, I am extremely grateful for your advice and considerations. I’m no longer entirely in the dark or the pits, and am ready to do a little more on my story.

Ha! Now I’m practically happy the images were shunned.

Go figure.

Thanks again to all. You’ve made my day.

What an uplifting thread!
DC, i always try to remember that the so-called “failures” are the experiments you learn the most from.

When everything goes just right, you get little feedback on what to improve, but a really good “failure” can give you massive positive info. Try not to “take it personal”, which makes it harder to learn. Maybe that’s why they say “Nothing spoils like success”?

Nice technique with the monotone view, Boozy

there will be more opportunities u’ll see don’t get ur hopes down … besides is more fun to fail, come back again and beat their asses again! hehe

Hi Denture
I have seen the 25 last(or first
I think you should made a more easily “reading clear concept” !
A tee shirt must be “strike a blow” !
So more is simple better is
But it’s easy to critic after
Pilou
Ps What is “doofus” ?

Doofus:

n. Slang pl. doo·fus·es

An incompetent, foolish, or stupid person.

Thx
Now I am a little doofusless
Pilou

Jim Coe,

Since failure balances success, whoever wins the Grand Moola, owes mine and 1665 other entries big time. :).

The moral of this loony tale is if I can’t sketch it with a simple tool such as chalk or a pencil, then I shouldn’t expect to be rewarded with riches if the software and computer I own can.

The top 25 are good choices. Time for me to get over it.

Frency Pilou,

Agreed. I cluttered the screen up, hoping the confusion would attract attention and $10,000.

Luckily, there wasn’t a $10,000 penalty for being a doofus.

And what’s a doofusless? I dare you to find a link :).

Thank you both for posting.
