Deformer point selection pivot position

HI,
when I apply a deformer to a mesh and select two symmetrical points the pivot is aligned to one of the two. Is it possible to !center the pivot between the two points?

Hello @ceend

Sometimes when symmetry is active, your process may result in the manipulator being visually attached to one side or another–there can only be one manipulator on screen at a time even if symmetry is active. The operation will still affect both sides equally.

Outside of the deformer operation, you can center the manipulator with the “go to unmasked mesh center” icon above the manipulator.

When the deformer is active, simply mask all but the control points you want to affect. In some situations, this can be easier to do if you disable perspective mode, and “mask through” points you want to select with a masking marquee from the side.

Right now you have two control points unmasked. The manipulator is visually located only over one of them, but will affect both equally. The manipulator is not centered because the center point is masked.

If you want to affect only the control point in the center:

  1. Clear all masking by dragging a quick masking marquee in empty canvas space.

  2. Draw another small masking marquee in empty space, and hold down the spacebar to allow you to reposition it. Drag the marquee so it masks only the center point. You will have to rotate your model slightly so that no other control points fall under the masking marquee.

  3. Ctrl- click in empty canvas space to invert the masking. Now all points BUT the target point are masked, and the manipulator should be located over the center point.

If you want to affect all three control points, with the manipulator in the center:

  1. Clear all masking.

  2. With perspective mode deactivated, turn the model to the side until all 3 points overlap, and draw a masking marquee around them. Ctrl-click in empty canvas space to invert the mask.

  3. Now all three control points are unmasked, and the manipulator is located in the center.

Hi Spindel,

thx for the extended answer. But in my case I’d like to use pivot with scale to equally move both deformer points in the middle. That would only work if one could center the pivot right?

In this case Im going to guess you have probably selected the points each in turn, rather than all at once. You should be able to fix it by simply ctrl-clicking in empty space to invert the mask, and then inverting it back again. When the mask re-inverts, both the points will be selected at once and the manipulator should be located at the center.

Again great advice. It works. Thx
