default symmetry is rotated???

Hello All,

I have a quick question and I’m sure it’s me but I can’t seem to find the answer anywhere…
When I start up ZBrush and choose edit then transform > use symmetry, my symmetry function does work however it’s rotated…?
so instead of having 2 dots horizontally I have a rotation of about 30% and the dots are moving accordingly. I can’t work like this…Does anyone know where this oddity comes from?? It looks like my default sphere allready has it’s pivot point f**ked up which doesn’t make any sense.
I found plenty of tutorials and ordered one of the recent books but the problem is so basic I that can’t seem to find the answer anywhere.

Please help me on my way.

Thank you very much in advance!

Are you snapped to an orthographic view? ie. Hold down Shift and click and drag on the canvas.

All symmetry and rotation is relative to the model’s geometric center and coordinates system.

When you draw the model on the screen, you are rarely sculpting with the model squared to the screen/canvas. As a result, your symmetry dots will be at an angle relative to the canvas but all of your sculpting will still be symmetrical relative to the model’s actual coordinate system.

If you hold Shift while rotating the model it will snap to the canvas coordinate system. Then your symmetry dots will be perfectly square because they’re aligned with the model (like always) and the model is aligned with the canvas. But of course as you sculpt you’ll see the dots move out of alignment with the canvas because you will be rotating the model out of alignment. That is only relative to the canvas, though. Everything you sculpt will still be accurately symmetrical relative to the model’s axis system.

Though i’m still confused why it starts up distorted using a standard sphere, the shift-rotate get’s the model aligned properly and creates a good starting point. Thank you very much for the advice  !!!.

Hold down Shift as you draw your mesh onto the canvas. Start to draw then hold down Shift.

Don’t forget the enable perspective option too. You can get the UI tweaked nicely after a bit.

Doug has a good idea there regarding the link he provided. I would also recommend that you download and install that plugin. Those buttons come in real handy to quickly switch orthographic views. I use them constantly.

Will do as soon I come home from work:-).
Thanks for the input, really usefull!
