Interesting tidbit :
…Monopoly
Liberalism system at the apex
Too bad.
You can count on Hexagon going down the drain.
I thought DAZ was a small company. Obvious not if they can buy Eovia! They must have mad some money on their “Mr. Finnegan’s Giving Chest” book with Dick Van Dyke.
The question is: When is Pixologic going to branch out?
… because??
First - I’m a Marketing Agent. Not anything to do with computers though but the concepts are the same.
You can build a product and go with a huge markup and isolate yourself to a high end market.
You can build the same product and sell at high volume with a low markup and encourage aftermarket.
The second is so successful that you are seeing the trends in software pricing changing right now. I would predict that even the giant Adobe will have to lower its price point dramatically if they want to keep there position in CG software. It’s the old question of whether you want 50% of a million or 15% of a billion.
It is a new world where software and computers are concerned. Powerful affordable computers are commonplace in households. The average Joe is becoming quite adept at using computers. High speed broadband is cheap and software can be distributed electronically. The new crop of customers grew up with computers.
There is nothing political about marketing. The concept is simple. Make money or die. Make a better cheaper product or fail. Buying your competition just means you are succeeding.
Don’t underestimate Daz’s influence on the future. I’m sure you would be shocked if you knew how many people out there are into Poser, Vue etc. that get pleasure from creating, using other peoples models that they are more than willing to buy provided the price is low enough. The professional CG market is tiny in comparison. Daz is a replacement for hobbies like ceramics, macramé and other crafts. Now Daz is literally giving away Hexagon to its loyal customers who will now develop a new interest in creating their own models. Absolute genius in my opinion.
Most hobbies that I know are not interested in creating their own models. That’s why they go to Daz - to get pre-made stuff. They like to compose with these models. I am not saying that hobbies are not talented, some folks have created some neat stuff with Poser and Vue, but it does takes an amount of patience, experience, and skill to create good pro models and artwork from scratch with software like Hexagon, Maya, Silo, etc.
Agree 100% with Blaine’s post, with one additional thought.
It isn’t just the hobbyist that use material from this site.
There are a number of graphic houses that use the items for
commercial work.
Repeating a story I had mentioned in another post.
Last year Maya had a show in NY to promote their program.
Various artists spoke and gave exhibits and slide shows of their work.
One of them ( my sincerest apologies for not having the name) was involved
with the History Channel Documentary “Rome”, it was shown concurrent with
and promoting the HBO miniseries of the same name.
One of the scenes showed a large group of Roman soldiers ( digital).
During the question and answer period someone asked how they did it.
They wanted to know if the program “massive” was involved ( the one from LOTR).
The response was no, that the house had purchased the figure and the clothing from DAZ and duplicated a lot.
To be honest ( and showing my ignorance) I thought it was funny and
laughed a lot.
The speaker, hearing my reaction, went on to explain that if you are in business and facing a deadline it is the results that matter.
From what I understand DAZ is doing quite well.
I am sure the insults and arrows thrown at them, hurts them…
…all the way to the bank.
You need a castle for a landscape… You go and buy one at DAZ for 20$, not the one of worse quality for 695$ from Turbosqam. I only wonder where all those soft porn models go to. I never see anything online posted as work. Is the stereotype V3 ‘user’ sitting secretly in the basement ‘posing’??? lol. Maybe it’s a hobby like building model train sets… Just with a different touch… snicker…
Lemo
Regarding V3 have you looked at the cereal advertisements
on Saturday morning tv lately?
