Thought I’d chart my progression further if I rejigged this as a sketch book Thread.
Classic Eddie from Iron Maiden’s Piece of mind cover, inspired me to touch up a sketch I did ages ago.
Gotta love Derek Riggs

I’m usually doing skulls and monsters so i thought this would make a nice change.
As it’s not textured I thought I’d try and convey some of it’s feather patterns with form, not sure if thats quite working.
nice bird sculpture, faether detail very nice.
Really nice bird sculpt…small_orange_diamond:)…Might want to extend the first few longer flight feathers out from the bottom edge of the wing just a little to add variation to that edge…Kind of like the way you did it on the edge of the tail feathers…also maybe make the claws longer and more sickle shaped and digging into the branch more…Just a couple of passing thoughts on my part,…that may be useful to you…

That’s an awesome Eddie, and I really like the bird too!
Thanks guys.
I agree with the feedback, as these are sketches I’m trying to stop myself fiddling after a certain time
So I’ll bear those in mind on the next bird
Having a go at some more natural stuff, I find something very appealing about frogs
I could have made him a bit more asymmetric, and added a few more dots on his lower back.
But I’m trying to limit myself to post sketchbook fiddling.
great stuff. material looks pretty believable. it’s all in zbrush yes?
would love to see your material setup for this
Yep all in one BPR pass, depth and a little contrast adjustment in photoshop.
I painted the texture, used a very slight wax modifier and tried Light Caps for the first time.
Didn’t realise you can create a set up from an existing photo, very cool.
Glad you like it
oh yeah those features with lightcaps are just stunning. but if this is just a bpr render then i commend you sir. the specular highlights on the skin detail are beautiful. why don’t you comp him onto a leaf or a lilly pad or something to complete him?
bpr render passes will give the alpha mask and floor shadows to make that much easier to do
Well done darkus-markus.
Ha, I love it. !!!
well done!
Oops forgot to say, thanks for the positive frog comments
Hi Markus
Nice hand gesture study man small_orange_diamond:)

I don’t know if you have it yet, but it’s the best book on hands out there. A really valuble resorce to have for any artist who likes doing great hands…Link to the book is posted above.
Anyway…Just stopping bye mainly to say…really enjoying your sketchbook…small_orange_diamond:)

Wow Those are my fingerprints, how did you get them? Really great Sculpt, could you explain your work flow? Cheers, David:D
SpiritDreamer - Thanks alot I’ve heard of that book, I’ve always found those instructional books go against my style of working but maybe I 'll give it a go.
Thats why I love zbrush so much, you can get a really nice flow going and then easily correct mistakes once you have the form.
chalkman - Thanks, I got these from the FBI’s most wanted so maybe I should pass on your details
Workflow is starting with a Dynamesh sphere and using my left hand as reference, as i did this throughout the day it was interesting seeing what details were more noticeable in different lights.
