Dan Eder's Sketchbook

Hi guys,

Lately I’ve been experimenting with a new style of cel-shaded rendering in ZBrush. My goal is to make pieces that look like flat 2D images, when in reality they’re fully 3D models. My first victims are Sokka and Aang from Avatar: TLA (Katara and Toph are next). Comments and critique are very welcome

Screenshots taken directly from ZBrush (no paintover work involved), single pass.

I’ll keep this thread updated with future projects.

Cheers!

Dan Eder

WOW! This is lovely. I love Kora and Avatar and you have done a fantastic job capturing the style - please show us more and how you managed to pull it off so well.

Thanks! I’ve been getting quite a lot of requests for a tutorial so I’ll be doing that once I’m done with Toph and Katara.

Hey guys,

I’ve finished my third character, Toph.

C&C welcome as always.

Cheers!

Pretty cool, pretty cool. I like where you are going with it.

First the sculpts. They look good but off, I assume that is a personal style choice. Aang is too bulky, Toph is too long and lean. All of the elements are there just not quite right, like these are older versions. Except Sokka, he looks fine.

The shading. I guess it depends on how close to the animated version you are trying to get. The shadows and color transitions are too smooth. Everything needs to be very flat with only two maybe three shades per color. At this point it reminds me more of the video games.

Those things are not to say that I don’t like it. I think they are looking very good. Just depends on what direction you want to take it.

Wyatt - thanks, your critique is exactly what I was hoping to hear! I stated it in other places I’ve posted but I was going for an older version of the characters, a few years after the end of the series. So I’m glad that’s something you noticed
In regards to the shading - it was never my intention to try and make it look like the animated version, I’ve always thought the regular cel shaded 3D look is a bit dull and overdone so I was trying something a bit different. Regardless, I still appreciate your critique, keep 'em coming!

If that is the case then right on. :+1:
Looking forward to Katara.
